Haxtun goes 1-1 in weekend action; preps for Peetz and Holyoke

The Bulldogs went 1-1 in basketball action last week. Haxtun took the court on the road in Kimball, Neb. Friday night and in a quick turnaround, hosted Prairie at home on Saturday. The Bulldogs suffered a 21-point loss on the road but came back home for the win against the Mustangs for the team's second home victory this season. Haxtun has had just two home games thus far into the 2024-25 season, but will add a third this weekend as the Bulldogs prepare to face Holyoke later this week.

Friday night's action put the Bulldogs on the court in a fast pace match up with a Nebraska team that seemed to sink just about every shot that went up. Despite a solid effort from the visiting team, Kimball took the win 70-49.

Senior Ryland Wolff led his team on offense with 13 points on the road in Nebraska Friday. Junior Chase Goddard added 10 points to the board followed by Colin Cone, who registered nine. Carter Lock contributed five points, Kanin Koberstein put up four, Max Grauberger and Tate Michael scored three apiece and Jaxsen Schram put up two points.

Saturday's match up was just the opposite as the Bulldogs took the court in front of their home crowd. Haxtun took the advantage and never looked back, picking up 50-30 win over the 1A Mustangs.

"It was great to back at home. We hadn't had a home game since early December. The boys were excited to back in front of the home crowd. Right now, it seems like we can get points from anywhere on our roster. If a few of our main scoring options are having a rough night, guys coming off the bench have been stepping up to keep our offense going," Jayden Stieb, Bulldog Head Coach said.

Madden Larsen racked up 15 points against the Mustangs, the team high. He also brought down nine rebounds under the basket. Ryland Wolff had back-to-back, double-digit showings for the weekend, putting 11 points on the board against Prairie. He also tallied nine rebounds. Goddard and Koberstein both added eight points. Goddard registered two rebounds in addition to his eight points. Schram put up four points and brought down one rebound. Corbin Andersen scored two points and Michael had two points and two rebounds.

In a busy week of basketball action, the Bulldogs traveled on Tuesday where they met up with the Otis Bulldogs. Haxtun fell in that match up, 68-39. Following that contest, the Bulldogs hold a 5-5 record.

This weekend Haxtun will travel to Peetz on Friday and Saturday host Holyoke. Peetz is currently 7-2 overall, according to MaxPreps. Holyoke stands at 6-3 on the season.

"I expect both Peetz and Holyoke to be tough games," said Stieb. "Both teams have had good starts to their seasons. We'll need to take care of the ball and step up our defensive effort. Offensively we just need to execute and do the little things right."
