New Haxtun business seeks to expand opportunities for developmentally disabled

LMD Services, LLC has expanded into northeast Colorado, establishing an office in downtown Haxtun. The Nebraska-based company provides services and support for the developmental disabilities community. Virginia Bahnsen, who lives in Paoli, serves as the Western Division Chief of Administration, heading up the local Haxtun office.

With a mission to lead, motivate and develop skills for community integration, habilitation and vocational participation, LMD Services provides opportunities for individuals with mental health and developmental disabilities to experience, learn and participate in their communities, homes and vocations.

LMD Services first opened in Lincoln, Neb. four years ago under the direction of Dante Owens, Lamar Wilbern and Montrey Brown-Posey, all who bring with them years of experience in caring for individuals with disabilities.

Most recently, Bahnsen saw a need for such services in northeast Colorado and through connections, reached out to bring LMD Services to the area.

"It's our goal to give these individuals a better lifestyle," said Brown-Posey. "We make sure everyone is seen, heard and enjoys their life. And we're here to help society see that, too."

LMD Services specializes in the areas of residential support, supported employment and day support.

"We work with those who have developmental disabilities to put the staff and systems in place so that they can have the highest sense of normalcy," said Owens. He noted LMD Services does not limit to any disabilities and commonly assists those with fetal alcohol syndrome, autism, traumatic brain injuries and cerebral palsy.

"No two individuals are the same," Owens added. "We are here to help based on their level of need."

LMD Services and its staff allows family to be just that, providing support so that parents, guardians and caregivers have the ability to slip back into their roles as moms, dads, siblings or grandparents.

"We want to make sure families don't burn out, because burnout is something we see quite often," Bahnsen said.

Mentoring and day services are also available through LMD Services.

The local LMD Services office is located at 119 East Fletcher Street, Suite 3M and is fully staffed Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bahnsen can also be reached by calling (402) 450-3640.

"This really is our passion and we hope we get the opportunity to collaborate with and enrich the community," Brown-Posey said.
