The Frenchman Board of Education heard from a group of Fleming seniors in their final meeting of the fiscal year. The 12th grade students presented plans for the annual senior trip, which was given approval by the Board. In addition, board members approved mill levy and October count numbers in the Dec. 11 get-together.
Beau Ashburn, Peter Brekel and Savanna Taylor presented plans for the 2025 Senior trip, slated for mid-March to Miami, Fla. This year's class includes 10 seniors who plan to visit the beach, go to an escape room, play laser tag and take a boat tour through the Florida Keys. Amy and Jeff Brekel are senior class sponsors.
After the presentation, the Board voted to approve the trip, with Board Member Brekel abstaining from the vote.
Later, in action items, the local BOE in Fleming, approved the 2024-25 October student count data. According to Superintendent Steve McCracken, this year's data shows 222 students in Fleming. Last year the District had 221 students and they year before that, 201.
Additionally, the Board approved mill levy numbers. The total General Fund Mill Levy was set at 28.141.
In her report, Principal Kortney Firme said Fleming Schools received a local food program grant for $1,376. Those funds will be used to purchase a new salad bar for the food service program.
In other business the Board:
• Approved Brekka Richardson as a substitute teacher;
• Approved a quote from Bayley Mechanical for a heater in the construction trades shop;
• Approved Nate Japp as an Assistant Basketball Coach;
• Approved increasing Derek Bandy's hours to 38 hours per week.
