A 2-1 showing at the 1A State Volleyball Tournament last week has brought the Fleming Lady Wildcats' season to a close. After wins in the second and third rounds and a semifinal loss the Lady Wildcats sit among the top four teams in 1A.
The Lady Wildcats advanced into the State Tournament after top league and regional finishes. They were ranked as the number three seed heading into State which allowed them a first round bye.
Tournament play opened on Thursday, Nov. 14 against the sixth ranked Stratton Lady Eagles who defeated Briggsdale Thursday morning. Stratton took the local ladies to five sets before falling in the match to drop into the elimination bracket. Fleming advanced into round three after taking the match 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-10.
The second match of the three-day tournament, played on Friday, pitted the Lady Wildcats against the Idalia Lady Wolves, a team they met less than a month ago. Idalia entered as the second seed, had a first round bye and defeated seventh ranked Dove Creek. Fleming and Idalia's second showing, the match they played round three at State, ended in the same fashion as the first with Fleming taking a sweep, 25-21, 25-12 and 25-18.
The match against Idalia marked Fleming's final win of the Tournament and of the year. It was their 18th sweep of the 27-match season.
The win over Idalia on Friday put Fleming in the semifinal round on Saturday in a do-or-done situation. In that contest, Fleming went up against the McClave Lady Cardinals who entered the Tournament as the number five ranked squad. By the time the Lady Wildcats met McClave, the Lady Cardinals had spent four matches and 12 sets on the court at State. McClave swept Weldon Valley and Otis on the opening day of play and fell to Merino on Friday. They returned on Saturday to defeat Stratton before facing Fleming in the semifinal game on Saturday afternoon.
The fifth ranked Lady Cardinals took third ranked Lady Wildcats to five sets. Sets one and two went to Fleming, 25-17 and 25-23, respectively. McClave fought back for the remained of the match taking a close set three, 25-20, before earning bigger victories in sets four and five, 25-13 and 15-10.
The single loss in the semifinal round ended the Lady Wildcats' season. McClave went on to upset the top-ranked Merino Lady Rams in the Championship, by a match score of 3-1.
The Lady Wildcats' season closed at 21-6 overall. They'll lose senior hitter Kylie Bretz-Hoskins to graduation next year. Watch future editions of the Herald for All-Conference designations.
