#9 Wildcats knocked out by #8 Arickaree in first round of playoffs

After going 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the 6-man North League, the Fleming Wildcats' season has come to a close after the first round of playoffs. The Wildcats advanced into the post season as the ninth-ranked team in a 16-team bracket which pitted them against the eighth-ranked Arickaree Bison.

Due to weather, the date, time and location of the opening round of playoffs was changed. The game, originally slated for Saturday at Arickaree, ended up taking place on Sunday at Prairie High School.

Arickaree struck first in the opening quarter of play, but the Wildcat offense answered back while the defense shut down the Bison. The Widlcats led after the first quarter, 18-6.

Fleming's offense continued to domintate throughout the second quarter. The Wildcats added 28 points and gave up just 14 to the Bison putting the halftime score at 46-20.

Arickaree returned from intermission on a mission and brought the score within four points by the end of the third quarter. They added 30 points to open the second half and allowed Fleming just a single touchdown. The Bison took the lead in the final quarter, shutting down the Wildcat offense to 12 points while adding 31 of their own. Arickaree advances into quarterfinals after an 81-66 victory over Fleming.

Sophomore quarterback Treyson Kirkwood completed 10 passes in the contest for 193 yards. He threw two completions for TDs.

Kirkwood's passes connected with four Wildcat receivers led by junior Pierson Japp who caught four passes for 74 yards and one TD. Junior Conner Marchant caught three passes for 56 yards. Sophomore Dane Cunningham caught two passes for 19 yards. Senior Grant Kuntz caught one pass for 44 yards and a touchdown.

Kuntz led the Wildcats' ground game with 232 yards. He currently holds the top spot in leading rushers among all classifications in Colorado high school football. He rushed for 2,142 yards this season.

Kuntz and Marchant led the Wildcat defense with 14 and 13 tackles, respectively. Kuntz brought down eight solo; Marchant brought down five solo.

The Wildcats end the year at 7-4 overall. They bid farewell to three seniors this year ­- Kuntz, Brekel and Kale Volkman.
