The top two teams in the 6-man North Conference are set to meet up Friday when the 8-1 Caliche Buffaloes host the 7-2 Fleming Wildcats. Both teams hold perfect 5-0 league records.
The Wildcats stood at 7-1 prior to last week's outing against the Idalia Wolves. Fleming sat two spots behind Idalia entering last week's play; Fleming in number seven, Idalia at number five.
The Wildcats trailed by 12 after the opening quarter in Friday's home contest against the Wolves, 20-8, and Idalia would go on to widen that gap to 28 points by the end of the half, 50-22.
The visiting team held Fleming scoreless in the second half and added 21 and six to their side of the scoreboard to leave the score at 77-22 at the final horn.
Sophomore quarterback Treyson Kirkwood threw for 110 yards on Friday night. He completed six of 15 attempts with a long of 37 yards. Two of those passes resulted in six on the scoreboard.
Senior Grant Kuntz found himself on the receiving end of both TD passes. He led the Wildcats in receiving yards with 58 total. Sophomore Conner Marchant followed with one catch for 27 yards. Sophomore Dane Cunningham caught two passes for 23 yards and freshman Izaiah Nielsen caught a pass for two yards.
The Wolves' defense proved effective at shutting down the Wildcats' ground game. Kuntz, who averaged nearly 260 rushing yards per game prior to Friday's contest, led the squad with 87 yards on the night. Freshman Dylon Monroe followed with 39 rushing yards.
Junior Pierson Japp led the Wildcat defense with six solo tackles and one assisted. Kuntz and senior Peter Brekel followed with five tackles apiece. Kuntz brought down three solo and two assisted; Brekel split his at four and one, respectively.
Brekel and Japp each caused one fumble. Nielsen tallied the Wildcats' lone fumble recovery. Kuntz and junior Mason Mollohan each deflected one pass and sophomore Michael Weis blocked a field goal attempt.
On special teams, Cunningham kicked off four times for 167 yards with a long kick of 45 yards. Marchant and freshman Evan Williamson served as punters for the night. Marchant punted twice for 61 yards; Williamson tallied 17 yards on his lone punt of the game.
Friday's game at Caliche marks the final outing of the regular season. According to Colorado High School Activities Association, the Caliche Buffaloes are seeded as the number eight team in all of Colorado 6-man. The Wildcats are ranked 11th on the same list. Kick off on Friday, Nov. 1 at Caliche is set for 7 p.m.
