Wildcats enter CHSAA's top 10; move up four spots from last week

A 340-yard night on Friday against the Briggsdale Falcons has put Lone Star senior Grant Kuntz at the top of the list of leading rushers among all classifications in Colorado. Kuntz has run for 1,621 yards on the season, averaging 15.2 yards per carry.

Friday night's win over Briggsdale bumped the Wildcats up four spots in the Colorado High School Activities Association's weekly rankings. Last week, the local squad held the 11th spot; this week they sit at number seven, two slots ahead of last week's league leader the Caliche Buffaloes. Caliche and Briggsdale are set to meet up this weekend; Fleming and Caliche meet up the following week in the final contest of the regular season.

The Wildcats handled Briggsdale last Friday night and the game closed with the Wildcats on top 66-28. Briggdale now sits in the fifth spot in the North Central League.

Sophomore quarterback Treyson Kirkwood completed three of four passes from under center. He threw for 55 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore Dane Cunningham led in receiving yards after catching one pass for 34 yards. Junior Pierson Japp caught two passes for 21 yards and a TD.

Sophomore Conner Marchant followed Kuntz's rushing efforts with 95 yards in the game. He punched two in for six points apiece.

Kuntz and Marchant led the defensive charge with 13 and 12 tackles, respectively. Kuntz brought down eight solo tackles; Marchant added seven. Both players assisted with five tackles each.

Cunningham wore the kicker's shoes for the night. He put six of nine points-after attempts through the uprights for 12 points.

Kuntz led on the scoreboard with 36 points off six rushing TDs. Marchant matched Cunningham with 12 points and Japp tallied six.

This week the Wildcats are set to host the Idalia Wolves. With a 6-2 overall record, the Wolves currently hold the third spot in the East Central League behind top-ranked Stratton and second place Otis. Kick off on Friday night in Fleming is scheduled for 7 p.m.
