The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs improved to 13-5 with a sweep over Kimball, Neb. at home on Thursday evening, Oct. 17. Of the team's handful of losses this season, three are to teams ranked in the top eight of their respective classifications, the other losses are to two teams who are among the top 20 in their classification.
According to Colorado High School Activities Association weekly rankings released on Monday, Oct. 21, the Lady Bulldogs sit 10th in all of Colorado 2A. Simla currently holds the top spot just ahead of the second ranked Sedgwick County Cougars, who Haxtun will face in the final regular season contest on Nov. 1.
The Lady Bulldogs took three commanding wins against the Lady Longhorns from Kimball last week, taking sets one through three, 25-16, 25-16 and 25-13.
Four led at the net in kills with six each including seniors Bobbi Starkebaum and Maggie Kilgour and juniors Emma Henry and Josie Freeman. Senior Jayleigh Bullard put down four kills followed by sophomore Emma Lemesany with two.
Freeman earned a total of four blocks, the team high, against Kimball, followed by Lemesany and Starkebaum, who each added two. Bullard, Henry and Kilgour each registered one block.
Lilly Lemesany and Kilgour sent over two serving aces followed by Starkebaum and Kelsie Hadeen, each with one. Starkebaum went 100 percent from behind the service line, sending over 14 serves against the Lady Longhorns.
In the back row, Lilly Lemesany led the Lady Bulldogs on defense with 15 digs. Kilgour registered 11 followed by Emily Anderson with eight. On serve receive, Anderson tallied 13 passes followed by Kilgour with 11 and Lemesany with 10.
Hadeen and Starkebaum, the team's two setters, combined for 27 assists. Hadeen registered 17 and Starkebaum added 10.
On Tuesday, Oct. 22 the Lady Bulldogs hosted Idalia for the annual Pink Out contest. In recognizing October as Breast Cancer Month, funds raised locally by the Haxtun Lady Bulldog volleyball team are in honor of Dr. Lila Statz, a beloved Bulldog mom, as she continues to beat breast cancer. Statz requests that all money raised on her behalf be donated to the Haxtun Health Cancer Assistance Fund.
Haxtun fell to Idalia in three, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-23. The Lady Wolves are ranked number two behind Merino in 1A State rankings with an overall 18-2 record, according to CHSAA. Stats for that contest were not available as of the Herald's early Wednesday press deadline.
This week Haxtun is set to host Dayspring Christian Academy on Friday, Oct. 25 for a night featuring both volleyball and football. According to MaxPreps, the Lady Warriors are currently 7-11 overall and 4-3 in the 1A North Central League.
