Lady Wildcats move up in rankings

The Fleming Lady Wildcats moved up three spots in the Colorado High School Activities Association rankings last week with sweeps over Lone Star and Prairie. With an undefeated league record of 4-0 the Lady Wildcats hold the top spot in their league and now sit in the fourth spot in State 1A rankings with a 9-2 overall record.

Last week's play opened on Fleming's home court on Thursday, Sept. 26 when the Lady Wildcats hosted the Lone Star Lady Longhorns. The opening set, which marked the closest of the match, ended at 25-20. The home team went on to take sets two and three 25-10 and 25-15, respectively.

Junior Ashley Bornhoft made a strong showing at the net both offensively and defensively. She tallied 11 kills for the night and put up five total blocks ­- three of those solo.

Junior Quincy Stull and sophomore Hayley Chamberlain followed Bornhoft's kill tally with nine and seven, respectively.

Chamberlain, along with junior Ciana Lousberg, split setter's duties for the day. Ciana Lousberg assisted with 18 kills; Chamberlain with 10.

Ciana Lousberg led the Lady Wildcat serve game. She put over a pair of aces and went 100 percent for the contest off 14 attempts. Her siser, Emoree, served for 16 points, putting one ace over the net on 20 attempts.

Junior Brooke Schaefer added team-high numbers from the back row libero's position. She received 24 serves and put up 17 digs with just a single error between the two categories.

On Friday night, the team traveled to Prairie where they took their second sweep of the week. Prairie came within six in the opening set, 25-19, but fell hard in sets two and three by scores of 25-13 and 25-11.

The Bornhoft/Quincy Stull hitting duo once again led at the net. Bornhoft put 14 kills on the ground while Quincy Stull added another seven.

Senior Kylie Bretz-Hoskins led the Lady Wildcat defense at the net with four blocks. She put up one solo and three assisted. Bornhoft followed with two blocks split at one and one.

Sophomore Hadley Stull led in aces with four after serving over 14 of 15 attempts. Chamberlain added three aces and went 13 for 14 from behind the line.

From the back row, Schaefer put 14 serves into play and earned a double-double with 16 defensive digs.

The Lady Wildcats play on the road in Thursday/Friday matches this week. They're set to travel to Otis on Thursday for 4 p.m. matches and Hi-Plains on Friday for 4:30 p.m. contests.
