Bulldogs top Crowley County 62-0 in gridiron action on Saturday

Over the past three games the Haxtun Bulldogs have been unstoppable on both sides of the ball. Since their outing with Wichita County on Sept. 6, the Bulldogs have allowed just 12 points on defense while the offense racked up a total of 144; a 132 point difference in just three games. The last two outings have been a complete shut out with a 60 or more point spread.

Most recently the Bulldogs hosted the Chargers from Crowley County, coming north from Ordway for a Saturday afternoon contest at Adam Wernsman Field. Haxtun's offense struck early and often, putting 38 points on the board in the first quarter and another 16 in the second for a 54 point advantage at half time.

The spread of over 40 gave the hometown Bulldogs the advantage of a running clock throughout the entire second half as well as the opportunity for the junior varsity players to see some time on the field. The Bulldogs added one last touchdown and two point conversion in the fourth quarter for a commanding 62-0 win at home.

"We have most of our guys back from injury so practices have been very competitive and physical," said Head Football Coach JD Stone. "This has translated into efficient games."

Junior Colin Cone completed three passes for 18 yards as quarterback for the Bulldogs. Senior Grant Statz completed one touchdown pass to senior Brandon Nall for 13 yards. Grant Firme totaled 15 yards in the air off one catch. Ryland Wolff had one catch for 14 yards.

On the ground, Grant Statz registered 109 rushing yards off four carries including one touchdown. His longest run totaled 62 yards. Cone carried the ball twice for 93 yards including one touchdown. Firme, Zach Statz, Tate Michael and Bret Kanode each carried the ball in for a rushing TD against the Chargers.

Grant Statz led the charge in tackles with a total of 10. He earned his with seven solo and three assists. Austin Knox had six total tackles followed by Gabriel Bacerra, Luke Gales and Zach Fryrear, each with four.

This week marks Haxtun's annual homecoming week with festivities and Corn Festival. Volleyball played on Tuesday night and on Friday, the football team will take on Front Range Christian.

"The girls need our support as much as we need theirs, that's what makes Haxtun a family," Stone said. "We practiced Tuesday morning so we could make it to the Volleyball homecoming games that night."

According to MaxPreps, the Front Range Christian Falcons out of Littleton are 1-2 overall with a win over Rocky Ford and two recent losses to West Grand and Elbert.

The two will met up on Friday at Adam Wernsman Field at 6 p.m.

"Homecoming and Corn Festival are very special to us all, yet they bring on a lot of distraction. We must stay focused on the task at hand, but still enjoy the week," Stone said.
