Long journey results in Bulldog shut out over Sanford on Friday

The Haxtun Bulldogs put nearly 800 miles on the bus to face the Sanford Mustangs on the gridiron last week. A 60-0 win puts the Bulldogs at 2-0 with two opponents on the schedule before league play begins this season. This week Haxtun is set to host Crowley County at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs' trek to Sanford started Thursday as the team practiced the last hour of school before loading up and traveling to Fountain for the night. First thing Friday, the team headed south over the mountains and down into the valley. Once there, the Bulldogs stopped at the Great Sand Dunes National Park for a couple of hours for lunch. Once in Alamosa, the Bulldogs checked into their hotel and made their way further south to Sanford for a 7 p.m. kick off.

Haxtun came out on fire on Friday, putting 30 unanswered points on the board in the first quarter and another 22 in the second for a 52 point advantage at half time. The Bulldogs scored eight more points in the third for a total of 60 on the night. The win gives the team a 2-1 overall record four weeks into the 2024 season. The Bulldogs had a bye week in week two.

Saturday morning, the team returned to Sanford for a junior varsity contest before making the six hour drive home later that night rounding out the three day trip.

"The guys got off the bus very focused," said Head Coach JD Stone of Friday night's win. "We blocked extremely well and read those blocks on offense. And our defense flew to the ball with four and five guys on every tackle."

Kanin Koberstein caught one pass for 63 and one touchdown. Madden Larsen tallied 34 yards in the air for one touchdown catch.

Grant Statz racked up four rushing touchdowns. He carried the ball six times for 135 yards with a long of 55. He averaged 22.5 yards per carry. "I personally want to thank administration, Boosters and parents for the support on the trip," said Stone

This week, the Bulldogs are set to host Crowley County on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. at Adam Wernsman Field. According to MaxPreps, the Chargers, from Ordway, are currently 0-2 with recent losses to Merino and Calhan.

The week after, Haxtun will face Front Range Christian at home and then thereafter, the schedule will put the Bulldogs against all Lower Platte League teams including Merino, Akron, Dayspring Christian Academy and Sedgwick County. The final regular season game is slated for Nov. 1 followed by post season play.

"We are still trying to fix ourselves, we want to be the best version of ourselves by the start of League play," Stone said. "Go Bulldogs!"
