Lady Wildcats open with sweep over Lady Rams; prepare for NJC tournament

The Fleming Lady Wildcats opened the 2024 volleyball season with a victory last week. The local ladies hosted the Akron Lady Rams last Thursday, Aug. 22. for the season opener.

The Lady Wildcat roster, which numbers 16 this year, lists several players with varsity playing experience. Kylie Bretz-Hoskins leads the team as the lone senior on this year's squad; six returning juniors are also listed on this year's roster.

Last Thursday's contest ended with a 3-0 sweep by the Lady Wildcats on their home court. They opened with a first-set victory of 25-20 and cruised to an easy match win with set scores of 25-16 and 25-15 in the second and third sets, respectively.

Juniors Ashley Bornhoft and Ciana Lousberg led in the front row in kills with 10 and nine, respectively. Junior Quincy Stull added another six.

Six Lady Wildcats put up blocks in the contest. Bornhoft led with five blocks, all of those assisted. Bretz-Hoskins and Quincy Stull followed with three assisted blocks apiece. Setter duo Lousberg and sophomore Haylie Chamberlain both tallied two assisted blocks, while sophomore Hadley Stull added one.

Bretz-Hoskins led the team behind the service line with three aces. Her serves resulted in 16 Lady Wildcat points in the match. Bornhoft and junior Emoree Lousberg served two aces apiece.

Junior Brooke Schaefer led the team from the back row with six defensive digs and 26 received serves. Bretz-Hoskins, Emoree Lousberg and Hadley Stull followed in the digging category with five each.

The Lady Wildcats are scheduled to play in the NJC tournament at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling on Saturday, Aug. 31. They are set to face off with the Holyoke Lady Dragons in the second match of the day at 10:30 a.m., followed by a noon contest against the Arickaree Lady Bison.

The team will then travel on Tuesday, Sept. 3, and Thursday, Sept. 5 for action against Sedgwick County and Wiggins. A 4 p.m. start time is listed for both of those matches.
