2024 wheat harvest winding down

AREA FARMERS HAVE WRAPPED up or are getting close to closing the books on this year's wheat harvest. Above, father/son team Loren and Ty Weers cut wheat northeast of Haxtun.

According to Colin Brott, with CHS High Plains, the first load of the Haxtun, Fleming New Haven area came into Fleming on July 2 from Alex Schmidt. Haxtun's first load of wheat crossed the scale on July 6, from the estate of Otto Lueking Jr., and Chad Bamford brought the first load into New Haven on July 8.

"We are on the downhill side now," said Brott on Monday, July 15. "Things are wrapping up pretty quick, we just have a few customers left at each location."

Brott said the average test weight in Haxtun is 58.6, protein is 10 and moisture is 11. CHS High Plains estimates that this year's wheat harvest is about 90-95 percent complete as of the beginning of the week.
