Fleming Schools adds carpentry program and installs cameras

Fleming School is adding a Construction Trades program for high school students. The addition of construction course work comes following a vote in a late-June meeting by the Board of Education.

According to Superintendent Steve McCracken, the construction trades class will teach students the skills needed to enter the carpentry industry. Students will learn all phases of residential home construction including foundation preparation, framing, electrical, plumbing and finish work.

"We are excited to see the program get started," McCracken said.

Nate Japp will serve as the instructor for the newly added construction trades program in Fleming.

In the same June meeting, board members approved an invoice from Code Red Audits for $17,954. That, McCracken said, is for the installation of new security cameras throughout the building. In a meeting the month before, the Board agreed to purchase the new cameras from Verkada for $31,000.

McCracken said the cameras system is being installed now. The project includes new, upgraded security cameras with the option to add more in the future. The Superintendent is in the process of applying for grant funds to help with the cost of the system and installation.

The monthly meeting, that lasted only an hour, also included staff reports and the approval of the consent agenda.

In her report, Principal Kortney Firme said the master class schedule is complete and that students would be in to register soon.

McCracken told the Board, in his report, that the District purchased some equipment for the kitchen form a restaurant that recently went out of business. He said the District purchased a six-burner gas stove, a halo slow cooker, flat griddle and other miscellaneous items including silverware and storage containers.

In other business the Board:

• Approved the resignation of Jeneva Withers as an assistant cook;

• Added Kally Kirkwood as a substitute teacher;

• Approve the 2024-25 budget with appropriations;

• Approved an engagement letter with Scott Szabo to conduct the annual audit.

The next Frenchman Board of Education meeting is slated for July 25 in Fleming at 6:30 p.m.
