Haxtun's 2024 summer ball program etched it's place in history last week with a complete sweep of the Border League softball and baseball tournaments. Haxtun teams claimed championship titles in both the 9-12 and 13-16 softball brackets as well as the pee-wee, little league and babe ruth brackets. Softball tournaments were played Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Oshkosh, Neb. while baseball played Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Chappell, Neb.
The 9-12 softball team, led by Noah Toops and Braden Ham, went 3-0 in the tournament with wins over Sedgwick County and Imperial, Neb,. to make an appearance in the championship contest. In that game, Haxtun took a win over undefeated Holyoke for the title.
The 13-16 softball team, under the direction of coaches Kevin and Jessica Beck, Cathy Starkebaum, Bobbi Starkebaum and Emily Anderson, defeated Yuma and Imperial on their way to the championship. On Wednesday night, the team beat Oshkosh, a team they had lost to twice this season, for the 2024 title and a 3-0 tournament record.
Both softball teams are back-to-back Border League champs with a repeat of the 2023 tournament.
In baseball action, Babe Ruth, led by Joey Gerk, Braden Plumb and Collyn Heinz, went 2-0 in the tournament. The oldest of the three baseball teams took down Oshkosh and Holyoke on their road to claiming a championship.
Haxtun Black Little League also notched a 2-0 tournament record. Under the direction of Owen Knode and Kyle Fryrear, the little league team beat Haxtun Red in game one and Chappell in game two to finish on top.
Haxtun Red Pee-Wee, coached by Joey Gerk, Braden Plumb and Collyn Heinz, went 2-0 with a first round win over Sedgwick County and a finals victory over Chappell for the title.
Haxtun's Red Little League and Black Pee-Wee teams finished third in their respective brackets. Both of those teams' tournament losses were to the Haxtun teams that finished in first place. Overall, the seven Haxtun summer ball teams went 16-2 in Border League tournament play in Nebraska last week.
