The Bulldog baseball season came to a close Saturday afternoon in Byers following a 6-4 loss to the Holly Wildcats. Despite holding the advantage until the top of the seventh, the Bulldogs came up short, ending the season just shy of returning to the Colorado 1A State Baseball Championships.
The game in Byers Saturday remained scoreless throughout the first two innings of play. In the top of the second, Holly found themselves in scoring position with two runners on base but a pop fly turned to third for a double-play ended Holly's batting streak without putting a run on the board.
Haxtun struck in the bottom of the second as Keegan Colgalzier hit a bomb to center field resulting in two runs-batted-in to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Holly added one run in the top of the fifth but ultimately the contest came down to the final inning where the Wildcats added five runs to the board. The Bulldogs made a solid attempt to answer back but came up with just two, ending the contest.
Holly advanced to take on Flatirons Academy, who the Bulldogs defeated in the State Championship contest last year. Flatirons Academy took the win in that game, sending the Buffalos to the finals again this year.
Senior Kaiden Schelling led the Bulldogs at the plate with a .750 batting average against Holly on Saturday. Senior Keegan Colglazier went .500 while juniors Grant Statz and Rylan Wolff each batted .333. Colglazier led with two RBIs. Statz registered one. Schelling and Colglazier each tallied one stolen base.
Freshman Madden Larsen pitched for the Bulldogs the majority of the game. He sat down two of 27 batters faced. Schelling threw the remainder of the contest for the Bulldogs.
Flatirons Academy is set to take on Akron on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at All-Star Park. Before that game, Merino will face Dove Creek, starting at 10 a.m. The winner of those two matches will then battle it out in the Championship game later in the afternoon.
This year's baseball team retires seniors Schelling, Colglazier, Mason Bornhoft and Austin Hanes.
