The Haxtun Bulldogs are moving onto Regionals as the seventh seed in a 16 team post-season bracket. Haxtun is set to take on 10th ranked Holly at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Byers High School.
The Bulldogs competed in the second round of Districts last week where they met up with the Merino Rams in Fort Morgan. Haxtun took an 11-0 loss to the Rams but post-season RPI rankings from the Colorado High School Activities Association keeps the Bulldog baseball season alive for another week.
Final RPI rankings, according to the CHSAA website, puts Haxtun at number four in 1A state baseball. Akron holds the top spot followed by Merino in two and Flatirons Academy at three.
In Fort Morgan on Friday, senior Kaiden Schelling earned a .667 batting average. Colin Cone registered a .333 average. Kanin Koberstein tallied one stolen base.
Games at Byers High School on Saturday kick off at 12:30 p.m. when second-ranked Flatirons Academy takes on 15th seeded Sierra Grande. The winner of that contest will meet up with the winner of the 3 p.m. game between Haxtun and Holly. The winner of the final matchup of the day will move onto finals on Thursday, May 16 at All-Star Park in Lakewood.
On the other side of the bracket, number one Merino faces 16th ranked Nucla. Otis, seeded eighth, will face Stratton. The winners of those two games will meet up in the final contest of the day on that field. Akron entered as the sixth seeded team and will face Evangel Christian Academy. The winner of that match up will take on the winner of a contest between Eads and Caliche.
According to MaxPreps, Holly is currently 13-8 overall. Last week the Wildcats suffered an 11-1 loss to Eads in District play.
