Mayhew honored with Commendation Award

ON JAN. 23, Logan County Sheriff Powell awarded Deputy DelRay Mayhew with the Sheriff's Commendation Award for his actions on Dec. 20, 2023 during a semi crash on I-76 at milepost 141.

Deputy Mayhew was the first emergency responder on scene and observed the driver, who was severely burned laying on the ground outside of the semi, which was fully engulfed in fire. Deputy Mayhew recognized the dangers associated with this and quickly moved the driver, along with bystanders, away from the semi to the opposite side of the median.

Almost immediately after moving everyone away, a large explosion occurred from the semi. While most bystanders on scene ran when the explosion occurred, Deputy Mayhew sheltered the driver from the immense amount of heat being put off by the fire, until medical personnel could arrive and provide further care. If not for Deputy Mayhew's quick thinking, serious injuries would have occurred to everyone standing near the semi.

"Thank you Deputy Mayhew for your quick thinking and heroic actions, we are thankful to have you on our team," Sheriff Powell said.
