Lady Wildcats go 1-1; take 1st league win

The Fleming Lady Wildcats hit the road for Friday/Saturday action over the past week. The girls fell to Statton on Friday, but came out victorious in their first league contest of the season on Saturday against Prairie.

Friday night’s game put Fleming on the court with the Stratton Lady Eagles. Stratton entered at 5-1 with their lone loss coming at the hands of the Colby, Kan., Lady Eagles. Stratton would advance to 6-1 after defeating the local ladies 54-39.

Senior MadiKay Serrato led her team in several categories for the night. She put 12 points on the scoreboard after sinking three, three-point shots and going three for four at the free-throw line. She led her team in rebounds with six; grabbing one offensive and seven defensive boards. She also contributed top numbers in assists and steals with three in each column.

Sophomore Brooke Schaefer followed on the scoreboard with 11 points. Schaefer, along with freshman Hayley Chamberlain, brought down five rebounds.

Sophomore Ciana Lousberg followed Serrato’s efforts under the net with six rebounds. She added nine points for the Lady Wildcats and matched Serrato with three assists.

On Saturday night, the team played in the season’s league opener at Prairie. The Lady Wildcats came out on top with a narrow, two-point win over the Lady Mustangs, 37-35.

Schaefer contributed an impressive eight steals in the contest — the team high. She also led the group in rebounds with six and assists with four. On the scoreboard, Schaefer added six points.

Seniors Tori Champ and Serrato followed Schaefer in boards with five apiece. Champ also made leading contributions in points with eight, assists with two and steals with four.

Lousberg led the team in scoring with 13 points. She made five, two-point shots and one three-pointer.

The Lady Wildcats traveled to Akron on Thursday, Jan. 18. Results of that contest had not been determined as of press time.

On Friday, Fleming is set to host Peetz for league action. The Lady Bulldogs enter at 1-8 on the year. MaxPreps lists a 4 p.m. start that afternoon.
