The Lady Bulldogs are gearing up for a busy week of basketball action before the team rests for Christmas break in a few weeks. This week's schedule includes the annual Holiday Tournament at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling.
Last weekend, the Lady Bulldogs took on Caliche at home in a Saturday afternoon contest. Haxtun put 13 points on the board in the first quarter and eight in the second to hold a 21-15 advantage at half time. The Lady Buffs outscored the Lady Bulldogs by one in the third but Haxtun maintained the advantage heading into the final minutes of play. Quick shooting by the Lady Buffs gave them a late-game lead they would go onto hold at the final buzzer for a 41-35 win. The loss for the Lady Bulldogs puts the team at 0-3 to start the season.
Haxtun's offense was led by senior Cassidy Goddard and junior Bobbi Starkebaum. Goddard racked up 12 points followed by Starkebaum with 10. Junior Jayleigh Bullard scored six followed by junior Emily Anderson with three and senior Heily Avery and junior Kelsie Hadeen, each with two points.
Goddard and Starkebaum registered double-digit boards in the contest against the Buffs. Starkebaum pulled down a total of 13 rebounds, six on offense and seven on defense. Goddard nabbed two on offense and eight on defense for a total of 10. Bullard pulled down eight rebounds under the basket.
Avery, Bullard, Starkebaum and Goddard each tallied two assists. Avery, Bullard and Starkebaum all had two steals.
Thursday's tournament play pits the Lady Bulldogs in a contest with Wiggins at 7 p.m. at NJC. The winner of that match up will go on to face the winner of Sedgwick County and Holyoke. The loser moves to the other side of the bracket. Play will continue on into Friday and Saturday. Other teams in the annual tournament include Merino, Prairie, Akron and Dayspring Christian Academy. Tournament brackets can be found on Facebook on the Haxtun School District page.
