Lady Bulldogs open 2023-24 basketball season in Fleming Friday

The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs kicked off the 2023-24 basketball season with contests against Fleming and Perkins County. The Lady Bulldogs opened the season in Fleming on Friday night and on Tuesday took on Perkins County in this year's home opener.

The 21 player roster includes four seniors, Cassidy Goddard, Heily Avery, Samantha Seger and Fallon Bamford. The Lady Bulldogs are led by Head Coach Alicia Schram and Assistant Coaches Casey Goddard and Dustin Seger.

Haxtun took the court against the Lady Wildcats in a girls varsity only match up Friday night. Fleming doesn't have enough players to suit a junior varsity girls team.

The Lady Bulldogs put 12 points on the board in the first half but trailed the home team at half time. In a big third quarter, Haxtun added another 12 points but Fleming kept the offensive pressure up for a final 47-32 win.

Junior Bobbi Starkebaum led her team with 16 points on Friday. She connected with seven field goals and two free throws. Junior Jayleigh Bullard scored six points followed by Kirsta Dishman and Cassidy Goddard, each with four. Bullard and Emily Anderson each shot 100 percent from the charity stripe, both sinking two free throws.

Under the basket, Starkebaum pulled down 13 rebounds, eight on offense and five on defense. Bullard pulled down four.

Samantha Seger led the team in steals with two. Kelsie Hadeen tallied three assists.

On Tuesday evening, the Lady Bulldogs hosted Nebraska's Perkins County for a red and black match up in Haxtun. The Lady Bulldogs put up 12 points in the first quarter and 11 in the second but trailed 35-23 at the half. Haxtun put 26 points on the board in the second half but fell 57-49 despite pulling within six in the final minutes of the contest. Stats for Tuesdays game were not yet available as of early Wednesday morning.

This week the Lady Bulldogs will host the Lady Buffs from Caliche on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Buffs are currently 1-1 following tournament play in Peetz in their opening weekend.
