Engle named Outstanding Wrestler at Akron

The Sedgwick County/Fleming boys' wrestling team started their season off on Nov. 30 with a home dual against Ogallala, Neb., in Ovid. SCF won this dual 42-22.

Individual results from wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming in the dual are as follows:

126-pound freshman Gradyn Helgoth defeated Tai Le with a fall in :51.

138-pound junior Gage Helgoth was defeated by Jorge Carrizales by fall.

157-pound senior Trent Wernsman was defeated by Rock Rezac by fall.

175-pound junior Kale Volkman won by forfeit.

On Dec. 2 the team traveled to Akron to participate in the Chuck Annand Invitational. The team ended the day in fifth place out of 19 teams.

Junior Scotty Engle ended his day as the 132-pound Champion and was voted the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament by the coaches. He opened with a win by tech fall over Caleb Tippetts of University, 16-1. He then took a quarterfinal win by fall over Blake Stivers of Yuma in 1:50. In the semifinal round, he won by fall over Aidan Sherman of Merino in 1:38. Engle won by the Championship match by decision over Coen Schmidt of Merino, 6-4.

132-pound Gradyn Helgoth ended his day 0-2. He lost by fall to Landen Beauvais of Dayspring Christian Academy and lost by medical forfeit to Aaron Ewing of Fort Morgan.

138-pound Gage Helgoth placed fourth in his division. He won by fall over Liam Yoder of Limon in 3:59 and won by fall over Kai Polk of Dayspring Christian Academy in 2:51. Helgoth lost to Kaleb Grauer of Akron won by major decision, 12-4. In the consolation semifinal, he won by fall over Liam Yoder of Limon in 3:56. He then lost the third place match to Marcellus Masias of Fort Morgan by fall.

Wernsman finished his day 2-2 in the 157-pound class. He lost to Kingston Rodriguez of Strasburg won by fall. He then defeated Lucas Hillman of Stratton in 0:56 and Charlie Hill of Eaton in 4:36. Wernsman lost his final match of the day to Josiah Mackintosh of Merino by fall.

175-pound Kale Volkman ended his day 1-2. He lost to Jordan Buller of University won by fall before defeating Adam Coronel of Byers by fall in 1:41. Volkman lost his final match of the day to Beau Gentry of University by fall.

The SCF girls' wrestling team had an exciting start to their season as they hosted the first ever SCF girls dual in the Revere Gym in Ovid. The girls dualed Wray and Ogallala on Nov. 30.

The SCF girls dualed Wray first and defeated them 36-18. Results of wrestlers out of Haxtun and Fleming competing in that dual are as follows:

125-pound sophomore Autumn Volkman won by forfeit.

In the 155-pound division, Olivia Stone defeated Lauren Gdanitz with a fall in 3:42.

The SCF girls then dualed Ogallala, Neb. SCF lost this dual 54-18. Individual results for wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming are as follows:

125-pound sophomore Annie Wilson was defeated by Jamie Biel by fall.

In the 130-pound class, Volkman was defeated by Kyra Skiles by fall.

Stone won by forfeit in the 170-pound division.

The team dualed Wiggins on Tuesday, Dec. 5 in Fleming. The boys' team is set to compete on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 7 and 8 at Southern Valley, Neb. The girls are scheduled to wrestle in the Poudre Valley Invitational in Fort Collins beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9.
