Bulldogs pick up 8th win this season; set to host Merino on Friday

The Haxtun Bulldogs improved to 8-0 with an impressive 26-point win over Sedgwick County on Friday night. The win puts Haxtun in the running for a third Plains League Conference championship with just one regular season game remaining. This week, the Bulldogs are set to face off with the Rams from Merino in the last regular season home game.

Action started off hot in Julesburg on Friday as Haxtun put 20 points on the board and Sedgwick County added 14. The Bulldogs outscored the Cougars by 10 in the second quarter to take a 16-point advantage at half time.

The second half opened the same, Haxtun adding 16 points to the board while holding the Cougars to just six. Both teams remained scoreless in the last 12 minutes for a final 52-26 win for the Bulldogs.

According to live RPI rankings on the Colorado High School Activities Association’s website, Haxtun sits at number three in all of 8-man action. Mancos holds the number one spot followed by Simla then Haxtun. Four teams still remain undefeated including Haxtun, Lyons, Simla and West Grand.

In Julesburg on Friday night, the Bulldogs tallied 13 first downs out of a total of 31 offensive plays. Haxtun registered a total of 527 offensive yards; 312 on the ground and 215 in the air.

Two Bulldogs played in the quarterback position. Ryland Wolff opened with game, connecting with three of four passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Colin Cone finished out the contest with three of four passes for 101 yards and one touchdown.

Keegan Colglazier caught three passe for a total of 142 receiving yards resulting in two touchdowns. Mason Bornhoft caught two passes for 58 yards. Kaiden Schelling had one 15-yard touchdown pass.

On the ground, Wolff led the Bulldogs with 184 rushing yard and four touchdowns. He averaged 26.3 yards per carry. Zach Statz carried the ball nine times for 103 total yards.

Four Bulldogs led with double digits in the tackling department. Colglazier and Statz each registered 16 tackles on Friday night. Wolff added 14 followed by Schelling with 11. Kailin Kelley tallied eight tackles followed by Cone and Seth Seger, each with seven.

Friday night’s action pits the Bulldogs in a Plains League contest with the Merino Rams. According to MaxPreps, the Rams are 4-4 with recent wins over Akron and Caliche. Their losses include those to Lyons, Manos, McClave and Sedgwick County.

Game time on Friday at Adam Wernsman Field is set for 7:30 p.m.
