What can we reason but from what we know? -Alexander Pope
What do you do?
Today’s title is half of a thought that has been lodged in my mind all morning. The complete thought is “What do you do where there is nothing to do?
That is where I find myself at the moment. No irrigation water to tend to. Cows all turned out on the hay meadows at home. I can watch them from my rocker in the sunroom, sprayed all the weeds around the corrals and buildings yesterday. Been to town to get the mail earlier. Mowed the yard a couple of days ago. It’s so hot and dry it isn’t even trying to regrow.
Ironically, I have worked so hard the past 35 years to make this ranch easy to run that I now find myself emersed in flat-out boredom!
I’ve thought about looking for a job but I can just imagine an interview.
Interviewer, “Under the question, list past work history you wrote, “mostly none.”
“Yep,” I answer, “that about describes it. I suppose you could say I was self-employed most of the time.” Fired myself twice though, for not showing up for work.
“Why?” he asked. “Nothing to do” I answered.
“You’re serious, aren’t you?” Interviewer asked.
“Yes sir,” I answered. “How did you manage to survive?” he asked.
After a pause, I explained, “well sir, I’ve been told when you love what you’re doing, you’ll never work a day in your life. Now that I think about it, I’m going to just keep on doing what I’ve been doing.
As I turned to leave he held up his hand and asked me to stop.
“I want to ask you a question before you go.”
“OK,” I answered, “what is your question?”
Smiling, he replied, “Can I come to work for you?”
“Sorry no openings at the moment,” I answered as I walked to my pickup and drove away.
