Bulldogs pick up first LPAA league win in Akron on Friday night

The Haxtun Bulldogs rolled to a 44-0 win in Akron on Friday night. The victory advances the team to 5-0 with four regular season games remaining on the schedule. Those four games are all set to be matches against Lower Platte League teams including Caliche, Dayspring Christian Academy, Sedgwick County and Merino.

Haxtun fumbled the ball on their first possession of the ball game in Akron on Friday night but kept composure to score on the next drive. Grant Statz found an opening into the end zone for the Bulldog’s first six points of the contest. Kailin Kelley ran the ball straight up the middle for the two-point conversion to put Haxtun on top early, 8-0.

In the Bulldog’s next possession, a long pass from quarterback Ryland Wolff to Statz put Haxtun in scoring territory again. The Bulldogs, in a hurry up offense, caught the Ram sleeping and Wolff hit Keegan Colglazier in the end zone for another six. Haxtun failed on the PAT but held a 14-0 advantage.

Akron took their time in a second quarter possession, marching down the field burning time off the clock but with just six minutes left in the half, Haxtun took over on offense. Wolff connected with Mason Bornhoft close to the end zone and on the next play, Statz found an opening for the touchdown. Wolff’s successful two-point conversion put the Bulldogs on top, 22-0.

The Bulldogs scored once more before half time to take a 30-0 lead.

Haxtun came out sluggish from half time, punting away their first possession of the third quarter but a muffed catch by the Rams gave the Bulldogs the ball back at the 30 yard line. Wolff again found Bornhoft near the end zone to put Haxtun in scoring range and a play later, he connected with Colglazier for another Bulldog six.

As the scoreboard went into a running clock scenario, Haxtun added one more touch down in the fourth quarter to cruise to a 44-0 win in Akron. The win is the first league win of the season for the Bulldogs. The team holds the number one seed in all of Colorado 8-man action.
