Laurence Nelson Skold of Haxtun was one of 25 Colorado men to receive an appointment to the U.S. Army Reserve Corps with the rank of second lieutenant. He is the brother of C.A. Skold.
The eight-year-old son of John Woodmancy of Holyoke, lost the sight in one of his eyes Monday night when he was struck by a firecracker. Vic Thomas also suffered an injury to his eye when he was hit by a firecracker thrown by another person.
Found guilty of driving an automobile while under the influence of liquor, Albert Heckman was fined $10 and costs here Wednesday afternoon. Heckman's driver's license was revoked for a period of one year.

The communicable disease report for Phillips County released by the Northeast Colorado Health Department is as follows: broncho pneumonia, one; chickenpox, seven; infectious hepatitis, one; measles, 73; strep sore throat, 10; and Vincent's angina, 11.
The majority of the beautiful lush wheat fields that had escaped to previous hailstorms were laid low Thursday evening when a fierce hail and wind storm from the northwest struck this community shortly after seven o'clock Thursday evening.

The word is in and it's good news for Haxtun Schools. The District is one of 31 recipients of the State's Building Excellent Schools Today grant in the amount of $3.25 million. The money, combined with a hopeful match of $3.39 million, will be used to add classroom space and to update the existing elementary school, including a kitchen expansion.
The Commissioners are continuing conversations about Phillips County's involvement in forming the 51st state. PC Commissioners attended a meeting on June 24 in Akron with Weld County Commissioners along with attorneys and representatives from surrounding counties.
