Air mail letters, mailed at Haxtun last Wednesday and Thursday were dispatched by plane here Thursday morning through facilities of a special one-day mail service. Between 75 and 100 letters made up the pouch of mail picked up at Haxtun, according to Tom C. Crist, local postmaster.
Several good rain fell through this section of the state during the past week to aid, farming, and soil conditions. Prospects have improved again this week, and the farming region looks better than in many years.

Pfc. Robert Monteith, son, of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Monteith, recently graduated from the Army's Troop Information and Education school in Dachau, Germany. He is a member of Battery C of the 59th anti-aircraft artillery gun battalion in Germany. He was recently joined by his wife, Florence, who has been making her home in Sterling since he left the States.
Fairfield News - Miss Astrid Franson spent a week in Holyoke assisting with the vacation Bible school held by the Church of the Nazarene. She is staying with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Sandquist.
New Haven News - Baptismal services were held on Sunday morning at the New Haven Methodist Church for Beverly Jo Mollohan, infant daughter,of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Mollohan.
R.L. Scott and son Wayne are spending a few days near Llewellyn fishing.

Lorene Meakins, a junior high science and math instructor at Haxtun elementary school, has announced her retirement from teaching.
An open house honoring the 50th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Brooks will be held Sunday, June 4, at the Haxtun Community Center.
The 1978 Haxtun boys' track team includes: Brian Biesemeier, Bryce Hill, Max Fetzer, Brian Henry, Dallas Reyher, Tony Schaeffer, Mike Kautsky, Art Lick, Norm Tanner, Mitch Miller, John Seiner, Lennie Fisbeck, Mike Miller, Troy Whitmore, Jim Orth, Ben Wernsman and Brett Garretson. Coaches are Keith Lick and Van Liufau. Managers Bev Wilson and Jackie Wernsman.
The Haxtun girls' track team consists of Rhonda Potter, Shelly, Stansbury, Arlene Weers, Lori Zimmerman, Gaye Noud, Shelly Burton, Carrie Holsten, Kristie Constance, Corinna Widgery and Lori Orth. Keith Lick is coach. Jackie Wernsman, Lori Hinde and Bev Wilson are managers.
Brian Biesemeier was recently named as the outstanding athlete at Haxtun High School.

Very little has been written about the real northeastern plains of Colorado, the small communities that dot its open, sky-filled mountain-less landscape ... until now. Local author Jean Gray's debut book Homesteading Haxtun and the High Plains is set to release on June 11.
