Tricia Etl's 5th grade class takes part in 17th annual World Fair

Seventeen students in Mrs. Tricia Etl's fifth grade class presented their World Fair projects in Fleming last week. The annual project requires students to pick a country to feature at the World Fair and throughout the project students are required to research, prepare and present their project to fellow students in Fleming the day of the Fair.

This year, Hank Stull chose Italy in part to his family's Italian background. In doing so, his presentation at the World Fair included many artifacts and souvenirs from his grandmother and other family members who have visited Italy.

Others in the class chose counties with family ties and others select random countries to learn more about that region.

At the World Fair event, other Fleming elementary students receive a passport and tour the world as they visit and listen to the fifth grade presentations. Many feature samples of foods from that region or hand out tokens special to that country.

"The littles make it a goal to try to listen to all of the presentations and fill out their passport books," Etl said.

Etl said the World Fair project takes almost a month to prepare for in her classroom as students spend Friday's researching and preparing their presentations.

The following is a list of each student in Etl's class and their selected country: Lilly Johnson, Iceland; Hank Stull, Italy; Mason Nicolet, Bolivia; Reagan Unrein, Madagascar; Jack Williamson, France; Rayne Fleharty, Mexico; Aly Johnson, India; Ry Swan, Netherlands; Easton Japp, England; Tayvn Lock, China; Cooper Robinson, Japan; Lorelei Manly, Greece; Logan Owens, Nigeria; Eli Betley, Spain; Corbin Dettmer, Norway; Aiden Maestas, Australia; and Easton Steward, Ireland.

The World Fair, now in its 17th year in Fleming, was inspired by Amanda Kerker, a former vocational business instructor at Fleming and now Northeastern Junior College business professor.
