Bulldogs enter postseason in top spot

It's playoff time and with two wins to round out the regular season schedule, the Haxtun Bulldogs enter the 1A District 5 bracket as the number one seed with a 17-1 overall record. The team went 8-1 in league and holds the number one spot in State 1A rankings.

The Bulldogs hosted Caliche on Saturday in the final regular season contest. Haxtun pulled away with two hugs wins, 15-0 in game one, and 12-1 in game two. The sweep over the Buffs gives Haxtun a six-game winnings streak as the Bulldogs head into post-season action.

Game one against the Buffs started off strong as 12 Bulldogs crossed home plate for an early advantage in the Lower Platte League contest. Haxtun added three additional runs in the bottom of the fourth to close the game out in four innings, 15-0.

Two Bulldogs batted 1.000 in the first game. Ryland Wolff had perfect plate appearances with two hits, two runs and four runs batted in. Keegan Colglazier registered two hits, three runs and one RBI. Kyle Fryrear and Jerron Turney each went .667 at home plate. Fryrear had two runs and two hits while Turney tallied two hits and one RBI. Michael Gerk, Kaiden Schelling and Grant Statz each batted .500. Schelling chalked up two RBIs.

Haxtun tallied a total of 12 stolen bases in game one led by Gerk, Statz, Colglazier and Wolff, each with two.

Turney pitched in game one. The senior pitcher sat down three of 14 batters.

Game two also ended early, in just four innings, after the Bulldogs went up 3-0 early in contest. Haxtun added one run in the second and eight in the third to top the Buffs 12-1 in the second contest of the day.

Schelling took the win on the mound in game two. The junior struck out four of six batters. Colin Cone also pitched, he sat down two of 13 batters on Saturday.

As in game one, Wolff went 1.000 at home plate. In game two, he tallied two runs, one hit and one RBI. Statz also batted .1000 in game two. Statz registered one run, two hits and two RBIs. Schelling led the Bulldogs in runs batted in with three in game two.

Wolff led with two stolen bases. Schelling, Fryrear and Statz each stole a single base.

This week the Bulldogs enter post season play as the top District 5 team. On Tuesday, Haxtun was set to face off with the winner of a contest between Briggsdale an Weldon Valley in round one of the District Tournament. Winners from Tuesday's action will advance to play in round two in Fort Morgan on Friday afternoon. A win for the Bulldogs on Tuesday would put them in action with either Otis or Caliche on Friday at noon. The District Championship is slated for Friday at 2 p.m., also in Fort Morgan.
