With just one opponent remaining on the regular season schedule the Bulldogs hold onto the top spot in 1A baseball action. This past week, Haxtun added two more wins to an already impressive record with a sweep over the Eagles at Wray on Saturday.
Both MaxPreps and the Colorado High School Activities Association rank the Bulldogs as number one in State 1A rankings. That also means Haxtun holds the number one slot in Lower Platte League standings as well. Several other Lower Platte League teams ranked in the top 10 according to CHSAA rankings include Merino at number two and Akron at number four. Following action over the weekend, Merino is currently 15-2 overall with a loss to Haxtun and Holyoke. Akron stands at 12-4 overall, the Rams four losses are to Haxtun and Merino.
Saturday's action in Wray started out slow as both teams traded places at home plate, three up three down, through four innings. In the top of the fifth, Haxtun got the bats rolling resulting in three runs and the first advantage of the contest. The Bulldogs went on to hold that advantage and chalk up a 5-0 win in game one of two for the day.
Mason Bornhoft batted .500 in the match up. He had one run and a double. Colin Cone went .333 at the plate with one hit and a double. Keegan Colglazier batted .250 and racked up one hit and one run batted in. Ryland Wolff, Jerron Turney and Kash Workman each registered one RBI.
Kaiden Schelling, Cone, Workman and Wolff each tallied a stolen base, giving the team four in the first game.
Turney took the win on the mound. The senior pitcher struck out nine of 21 batters. He allowed just two walks.
Game two went into extra innings as it was much closer than the first. Haxtun went up two runs to none in the first inning but allowed Wray three runs in the bottom of the third. The Bulldogs found themselves in a deficit after the fourth inning but battled to tie the game and send it into eight innings. The Bulldogs had several runners cross home plate and held the Eagles scoreless to take the win, 9-6.
Gerk led at the plate in game two with a .667 average. He had one run, two hits and two RBIs. Colglazier also went .667, tallying three hits, two runs and one RBI. Kyle Fryrear batted .5000 earning one run, one hit and one RBI. Wolff, Cone and Tempel also added RBIs in game two.
Wolff and Colglazier each had one stolen base.
Game two went to Schelling on the mound. He struck out six of 23 batters. Cone finished out the game, sitting down five of eight batters faced.
This week the Bulldogs host the Buffs from Caliche High School. According to MaxPreps, Caliche holds a 6-10 overall record and is 0-3 in league play. Double header action against the Buffs is set for 11 a.m. in Haxtun on Saturday.
