The Bulldogs improved to 8-0 with double-header wins over Yuma on Saturday. The early April weather cooperated with perfect, sunny skies for baseball action in Haxtun with games starting late morning and running well into the afternoon. The Bulldogs hold a perfect record and are one of two undefeated teams in the Lower Platte League as of early this week. The other team, Merino, holds the number one seat, just ahead of the second ranked Bulldogs. Haxtun and Merino are set to face off this Saturday.
Haxtun scored one single run early in game one of the double header with Yuma. The home team added two runs in the third to up the lead to three. The Indians crossed home plate for the first time in the top of the fourth, putting two runs on the board to bring the game within one. The Bulldogs added two runs in the bottom of the fourth and five in the bottom of the sixth to go into double-digits. Yuma managed just to runs in the top of the seventh to close out the game with Haxtun on top, 10-5.
Junior Kaiden Schelling batted 1.000 in game one, earning two hits and three runs. Senior Jerron Turney went .750 at home plate with one run and three hits and five runs batted in. Keegan Colglazier and Ryland Wolff both earned a .500 batting average. Colglazier had one run, two hits and one RBI. Wolff tallied two runs, one hit. Grant Statz, who batted .250, also registered one RBI.
Schelling led his team with two stolen bases. Kyle Fryrear and Turney each had a stolen base.
Turney earned the win on the pitcher’s mound. The senior faced 24 batters. He struck out 10 of them. Schelling closed out the game, sitting down one of six batters.
Yuma nudged out three runs in the top of the first inning of game two to take an early advantage but the Bulldogs answered back with three runs in their at-bat. The bottom of the second was huge for the Bulldogs as seven runners crossed home plate. Haxtun added two runs in the third and one in the fourth for a final 13-3 win.
Junior Mason Bornhoft and Schelling each went 1.000 at home plate in game two. Bornhoft had one run, three hits and two RBIs. Schelling had three runs, two hits and two RBIs. Statz batted .667, registering two runs, two hits and also two RBIs. Fryrear and Wolff each earned a .500 batting average. Wolf also tallied one RBI. At his time at the plate, Colglazier batted in two runs. Fryrear tallied one RBI on the day.
As in game one, Schelling and Turney led the Bulldogs in stolen bases, each with two. Fryrear, Statz and Wolff each registered one.
Schelling took the win as pitcher in game two. He faced 19 batters, striking out five of them. Colglazier closed out the contest, facing one batter.
This week the Bulldogs traveled to Briggsdale for a Tuesday afternoon match up with the Falcons. On Thursday, Haxtun hosts Otis and Saturday, Merino is scheduled to meet up with the Bulldogs at home for a double-header beginning at 11 a.m.
