Haxtun senior Mick Scholten signed a letter of intent to attend North Central Kansas Technical College in front of friends and family last week. Scholten plans to attend NCK Tech's heavy equipment operation next fall.
Scholten will attend NCK Tech in Beloit, Kan. in the school's heavy equipment operation program, a one year program that guarantees job placement at completion.
The Heavy Equipment Operation Program incorporates the National Center for Construction, Education and Research curriculum. NCCER certified instructors provide hands-on training using scrapers, motor graders, dozers, excavators, loaders and backhoes. Students check grade using GPS equipment and hand and laser levels.
The program also includes theory training in rollers, asphalt and concrete paving equipment. Students may complete internships during their one-year course of study and, upon successful completion of the program, receive a Heavy Equipment Operation Certificate.
NCK Tech's heavy equipment operations program receives support from Murphy Tractor and Foley Equipment that allows the students the opportunity to train with late model John Deere and Caterpillar equipment.
Mick will graduate from Haxtun High School next month with the Class of 2023. He is the son of Doug and Shannon Scholten, Haxtun.
