This educational travel opportunity will offer 2023-24, ninth through 12th grade high school students, the chance of a lifetime to see our nation's capital. Washington DC offers rich and immense history. Travel brings curriculum to life while teaching lessons that students will need throughout their lives. As an eighth grader in 1995, Haxtun High School teacher Holly Kelley was fortunate to take almost this identical trip.
“My goal is to give this opportunity back to students. Looking back almost 30 years, I realize this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students as it was for me to this day,” she said.
Some of the stops on the trip include Gettysburg Battlefield Reliving this historic Civil War battle, Mount Vernon George Washington’s home, plantation and Education, Capitol Hill, Washington Monument, Arlington National Cemetery, Jefferson, MLK, and FDR memorials, National Cathedral, National Zoo, White House, Smithsonian, Lincoln Memorial, Fords Theater and so much more.
The trip is inclusive of all meals, flights, hotels and transportation. There is a financial assistance program available for families with annual adjusted household incomes of $85,000 or less. And, there’s a great fundraising program called the Gift of Education where 100 percent of the money the students raise goes directly to offset the trip price. World Strides offers nightly security with the group at hotels.
“My hope for the future would be for the DC club to travel every four years,” Kelley said.
There will be a parent meeting on April 11 at 6 p.m. at the Haxtun Community Center in the Lions Room for all who are interested. For more information please contact Kelley at (970) 630-9333 or [email protected].
