The Fleming Lady Wildcats have clenched the second seed heading into District 4 action later this week. They wrapped up the regular season with a home loss to the Sedgwick County Lady Cougars and a road win over the Idalia Lady Wolves. With an overall record of 12-6, the Lady Wildcats fall a spot behind the 17-2 Briggsdale Lady Falcons entering the post season.
The Lady Wildcats got off to a slow start in the opening quarter against Sedgwick County on Thursday night. They trailed by nine after the first and by 11 at the half.
Sedgwick County maintained the upper hand throughout the second half adding another nine to their advantage in the third. The Lady Wildcats out scored the visiting team by five in the fourth, but remained behind, 51-36, at the final buzzer.
Senior Kally Kirkwood led the Lady Wildcats on the scoreboard with 11 points. She also led in rebounds with 12 to give her a double-double for the night.
Freshman Ciana Lousberg followed Kirkwood's tally with nine points. Junior MadiKay Serrato followed under the basket in boards with six.
On Friday the team traveled to Idalia where they faced off with the Lady Wolves in the final contest of the regular season. Fleming cruised to an early, seven-point lead in the opening 10 minutes. They upped that advantage another 16 in the second quarter to hold a solid 35-12 lead at the half.
The Lady Wolves matched Fleming at 15 points in the third quarter and shaved nine points off Fleming's lead in the fourth, but trailed at the close of the contest, 56-42.
Kirkwood led her team on the scoreboard for the second consecutive night; this time with 17 points. Senior Lexi Schaefer and Serrato followed with 14 points apiece.
Senior Maddy Harms led in rebounds with six; one offensive and five defensive. Kirkwood and freshman Ashley Bornhoft followed with five.
The Lady Wildcats are set to enter the District 4 Tournament on Friday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. As the second-ranked team, they are set to take on the third-ranked Prairie Lady Mustangs. The two teams met in mid-January with Fleming taking a 46-11 road victory on that occasion.
The winner of Fleming versus Prairie on Friday will advance to the District Championship slated for Saturday at 2 p.m. The District 4 Tournament is scheduled to take place at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling.
