The final week of the 2023 high school wrestling season is upon us. The Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestlers completed the 2023 Regional Tournament last weekend.
110-pound senior Aliyah Engle is the first ever Sedgwick County/Fleming Girls' State Qualifier. Aliyah, her twin sister Destanie and Britney Huffman participated in the CHSAA Girls' Region Three Wrestling Tournament this past weekend in Broomfield.
Results from the Engle sisters who wrestled in the Regional Tournament out of Haxtun last weekend are as follows:
105-pound Destanie Engle finished 2-3 and placed sixth. In the quarterfinal match, she lost to Lauren Scott, Chatfield won by fall. In consolation round two, she won by a fall in 1:24 over Victoria Bilbrey, Abraham Lincoln. She won consolation round three by fall in 1:58 over Riley Hettich, Vista Peak. In the consolation semifinal round, Destanie lost to Chloe Smith, Yuma, by fall. In the fifth place match, she lost to Milar Little, Eaglecrest, by major decision.
110-pound Aliyah Engle went 4-2 and placed fourth. She won her opening round by fall in 3:26 over Nancy Jardine, Mead. She lost by major decision in the quarterfinal round to Haliegh Worthy, Englewood. She won consolation round two by fall in 1:45 over Giuliana Cavaleri, Legacy and consolation round three by fall in :49 over Aurora Mendoza, Brush. In the consolation semifinal round, Aliyah won by a fall in 4:27 over Andrea Sanchez Chacon, Vista Peak. In the third place match, she lost by major decision to Aliyah Serna, Greeley West.
The SC/F boys' team qualified six wrestlers for the State Tournament. Scotty Engle was crowned the 126-pound Regional Champion. Joining him at the State Tournament will be 113-pound Kaiden Schelling who placed second at Regionals; 138-pound Mario Ortiz who placed fourth; 144-pound Jack Bornhoft who placed fourth; 157-pound Bryan Bagby who placed second; and 165-pound Grant Statz who finished second.
As a team, the squad finished in second place at Regionals behind Wray. Individual results from wrestlers competing out of Haxtun and Fleming in the boys' Regional Tournament are as follows:
113-pound Kaiden Schelling finished 2-1 and in second place. He won his quarterfinal match by fall in 1:40 over Logan Haflich, Limon and won the semifinal match with a 2-1 decision over Merek Charney, Akron. In the championship match, Schelling lost to Miguel Franco, Dolores Huerta Preparatory, by 8-2 decision.
126-pound Scotty Engle finished with an undefeated 3-0 record on the day earning the 126-pound Regional Championship. In his quarterfinal match, Engle won by a fall in :47 over Tanner Himes, Yuma. He defeated Cooper Barnes, Burlington, by fall in 1:39 in the semifinal match. In the Championship match, Engle won by a 1-0 decision over Jon Yapoujian, Byers.
132-pound Gage Helgoth finished the day at 0-2. He lost to Tristan Davidsen, Byers, won by fall and Degan Buchtel, Merino, by fall.
144-pound Jack Bornhoft finished 3-2 and placed fourth. He won his opening round by fall in 3:21 over Josiah Mackintosh, Merino. He then took the quarterfinal round by fall in 5:26 over Stockton Fye, Stratton. In the semifinal match, Bornhoft lost by fall to Lain Yapoujian, Byers. He won by a fall in 4:03 over Connor Halde, Burlington, in the consolation seminfinal and lost to Logan Clark, Dayspring Christian Academy, won in the third place match.
165-pound Grant Statz went 3-1 for a second place finish. He won by fall in 1:28 over Payten McCall, Burlington, in round one. He then won the quarterfinal round with a 8-3 decision over Lochlan Osborne, Lyons. In the semifinal round, Statz won by a major decision, 13-5, over Grady Linman, Wray. He lost his Championship match to Keon Bandy, Limon, won by fall.
175-pound Ryan Davis finished Regionals at 1-2. He lost the quarterfinal round to Kevin Hermosillo, Yuma, by fall. He then defeated Ethan Becarra, Byers, by fall in 2:18 in consolation round two. In the third round of the consolation bracket, Davis lost to Joe Shean, Stratton, by fall.
190-pound Kale Volkman finished the tournament at 0-2. He wrestled in the 157-pound division for most of the season and jumped up to 190 pounds to fill the weight. He lost to Payton Wade, Wray, by fall and lost to Donivin Rael, Dolores Huerta Preparatory, won by fall.
The State Wrestling Tournament is set to begin on Thursday, Feb. 16. State Wrestling is scheduled to take place at Ball Arena in Denver.
