Three games remain on the Haxtun Bulldog's regular season schedule and these last few weeks are big ones when it comes to match ups.
Head Coach Jayden Stieb says his team is working to fix the small things in order to play sound basketball as the team prepares to face Merino, Peetz and Akron before the post-season begins.
Over the past week, the Bulldogs stayed home in back-to-back contests in Haxtun last week. Haxtun notched a win over Caliche on Friday but fell to a tough Wray team on Saturday.
The Bulldogs took on Caliche in the two team's second outing this season and as in the first, Haxtun came out on top, this time by eight with a final 58-50 score. The most recent win will go down in league records for the Bulldog team.
According to stats from Stieb, Ryland Wolff led his team in the scoring department with 20 points. Maclin Tempel registered 16 points followed by Michael Gerk with 13. Kyle Fryrear put up 10.
The following night, Haxtun hosted the Eagles from Wray in a full day of action with a six-pack line up of c, junior varsity and varsity contests for both boys' and girls' teams. The Eagles took a commanding first quarter advantage and later rolled to an 81-44 win over the Bulldogs.
"I think we need to take better care of the ball and make our free throws. Those were the two glaring problems from both Wray and Caliche," said Stieb. "With three big games coming, we need to focus on finishing the season strong. This is the best time of the season to go on a run."
Gerk led the Bulldogs on Saturday with a high of 13 points. Chase Goddard added eight points followed by Tempel and Wolff, each with six, and Fryrear with two.
This week the Bulldogs are set to travel to Akron on Friday to take on the 6-9 Rams. According to their schedule on MaxPreps, the Rams suffered a loss to Merino last Friday but picked up a win over Perkins County in a contest the night before.
"Right now we're focused on fixing the little things. Playing more sound defense, rebounding and turnovers. Those things will be important in each game left on the schedule," Stieb said.
