Lady Wildcats take first two losses; drop to CHSAA's number five

Fleming's Lady Wildcats faced a challenging weekend last week going up against 2A's top-ranked Merino Rams and 1A's second-ranked Briggsdale Lady Falcons. Following losses on both occasions, the Lady Wildcats dropped a spot in Colorado High School Activities rankings to the number five slot.

Fleming held a perfect 8-0 record on the year prior to this weekend's action. Merino stepped onto Fleming's court on Friday night to take a 53-40 victory over the Lady Wildcats. Briggsdale came to town for a Saturday night win at Fleming, 64-3.

Senior Kally Kirkwood hit double digits on Friday night against Merino with 10 points. She also pulled down 13 rebounds for a double-double.

Senior Maddy Harms followed Kirkwood's offensive efforts with eight points. MadiKay Serrato followed in boards with six.

Saturday night's leading contributors put up much lower numbers as the Briggsdale Lady Falcons shut Fleming's offense and defense down.

Kirkwood again led on the scoreboard - this time with six points. She led under the basket in rebounds with seven; five of those defensive.

Junior Tori Champ followed in points adding five. Harms and senior Laney Schliesser followed in rebounds with four apiece.

Fleming faced off with Akron on Tuesday night. Akron entered the contest as 2A's third-ranked team. Watch for coverage of that contest in next week's issue.

Later in the week, the Lady Wildcats are set to hit the road to Weldona and Genoa-Hugo. Friday night's contests at Weldona are set to start at 5 p.m. Saturday's games in Hugo start at 3 p.m. Neither team is currently ranked by CHSAA.
