Wrestlers compete in two events in Nebraska

The Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestlers had a busy weekend which started with participating in the Elm Creek Invitational on Friday, Jan. 13. They ended the day with a third place team finish for the boys and four champions.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, the team traveled to Imperial, Neb. to participate in the Chase County Invitational. The girls ended their day with a sixth place team finish out of nine teams and one champion and the boys finished in third place out of 20 teams with four champions.

Results from the Elm Creek Invitational:

100-105-pound Destanie Engle lost to Sarah Christian of Hill City by fall and defeated Paisley Johnson of St. Mary's with a fall in :50.

100-105 Aliyah Engle defeated Sarah Christian of Hill City with a fall in 1:45 and Paisley Johnson of St. Mary's with a fall in :44.

113-pound Kaiden Schelling finished the day in first place. He won the semifinal round fall by over Ian Dunse of Alma in 1:24. In the championship match, Schelling won by fall in 4:59 over Adam Schroder of Twin River.

126-pound Gage Helgoth did not place. He lost to Jaxon Smith of Elm Creek by fall and lost by 4-1 decision to Shane Smith of Twin River.

126-pound Scotty Engle finished his day in first place. He won by fall over Jayden Klein of North Platte St. Patrick's in 1:47 and took the semifinal round by medical forfeit over Oliver Nutter of Sutherland. In the first place match, Engle won by a 15-0 tech fall over David Melo of Lexington JV.

145-pound Trent Wernsman did not place. He lost by fall to Sylar Rohr of Hill City and lost to Arturo Lopez of Lexington JV by fall.

145-pound Jack Bornhoft finished in first place. In the quarterfinal round, Bornhoft won by a 3:22 fall over Arturo Lopez of Lexington JV. He took the semifinal round with a 1:32 fall over Sylar Rohr of Hill City. In the championship match, Bornhoft won by a 9-0 major decision over Kason Bruns of Sutherland.

160-pound Kale Volkman did not place. He lost by fall to Lorenzo Levario of Cozad in round one and lost by fall to Nathanial Mundahl of Twin River.

160-pound Grant Statz placed third. In round one, Stataz won by a 5-3 decision over Cole Kerner of Sutherland. He won the quarterfinal round by fall in 1:33 over Hayden Anderson of Sutherland. Statz lost in the semifinal round to Bryan Van Houten Bagby of Sedgwick County/Fleming by decision, 6-1. In the consolation semifinal, Statz won by a 6-2 decision over Cole Kerner of Sutherland and took the third place match over Cade Dinkel of Hill City by fall in :27.

Results from the Chase County Invitational:

100-pound Destanie Engle placed third. She lost in round one to Aubree Stutzman of Sandhills Valley Girlsby fall. She then defeated Britney by fall in 2:27 and Carlie McKibbin of Bayard Girlsby fall. In round five, Engle won by fall in :57 over Shelby Hardin of Morrill Girls.

105-pound Aliyah Engle finished the day as the 105-pound champion. She won by 17-0 tech fall over Kimberly Ruperto of Bayard Girls and won by fall in 2:23 over Gracelyn Fries of Southwest Girls.

113-pound Kaiden Schelling was the 113-pound champion. He won round one by fall in :33 and took round two by fall in :51 over Gabriel Kendrick of South Platte. In the semifinal round, Schelling won by fall in :37 over Luke Gardner of Garden County. In the championship match, he defeated Blake Devitt of Hitchock County by a 6-5 decision.

126-pound Gage Helgoth did not place. He lost to Tanner McLain of Hitchcock County, 17-8, and lost to Mitchel Stritt of Southwest by fall.

126-pound Scotty Engle finished the day as the champion in his division. He won by a 17-5 major decision over Keltin Vanarsdall of Hershey and won by fall in 2:52 over Nathaniel Barker of Bayard. In the first place match, Engle won by a 14-4 major decision over Tanner McLain of Hitchcock County.

145-pound Jack Bornhoft finished the day as the 145-pound champion. He won by fall in 1:02 over Tyler Lashley of Morrill and won by fall in 3:46 over Connor Halde of Burlington. In the semifinal round, Bornhoft won by fall in 4:46 over Westyn Mendenhall of Chase County. He won the championship match by fall in 1:40 over Harrison Barnette of Bridgeport.

145-pound Trent Wernsman did not place. He lost his opening match to Karson Shuler of Hitchcock County won by fall and fell to Tucker Mollendor of Chase County in the opening round of the consolation bracket.

160-pound Kale Vokman did not place. He lost to Tanner O'Brien of Hitchcock County by fall and lost to Brian Coyle of Yuma by fall.

160-pound Grant Statz placed second. He won by fall in 1:01 over Jaydon Parker of Hershey and won by fall over Eric Tracy of Wray in 3:04. In the semifinal round, Statz won by a 3-0 decision over Cooper Dillan of Chase County. He lost the championship match to Bryan Van Houten Bagby of Sedgwick County/Fleming by 9-4 decision.

The team is scheduled to travel to Kearney, Neb. on Jan. 20 to participate in the UNK Midwest Duals before heading to Atwood, Kan. to participate in the Buffalo Invitational on Jan. 21.
