Despite a three-game losing streak, the Bulldogs hold a winning 6-4 record and a top 10 spot in 2A/3A Lower Platte League standings, according to MaxPreps. Haxtun suffered losses to Holyoke and Yuma at home last week giving the team their first back-to-back losses this season.
The Bulldogs first faced off with a fast-paced Holyoke team at home on Tuesday night for a county-rival game that always packs the stands full of fans. The Dragons jumped to an early lead in the first quarter and despite efforts to play catch up, Haxtun fell by 20.
A match up that was supposed to be played on Friday but was later moved to Saturday brought the Indians from Yuma to Haxtun's home court in a tough battle of Lower Platte League teams. Haxtun topped the Indians by three in the first quarter but five more points from the Indians compared to the Bulldogs' 11 gave Yuma a two-point lead at half time. The Bulldogs bettered Yuma by five in the third quarter for a late-game advantage and even held a lead with 90 seconds left in the game but free-throw shooting and late game buckets gave the Indians a lead and ultimately a 53-47 win.
This week Haxtun is set to face off with Sedgwick County in Julesburg on Friday and travel again on Saturday as they take the road to Otis for a battle of the Bulldogs. According to MaxPreps, Sedgwick County is 2-6 overall and 1-1 in league play. Otis currently holds a 5-3 record and stand 2-0 in their 1A league.
