Haxtun BOE accepts Quigley's resignation

In one last meeting before the end of the fiscal year, the Haxtun Board of Education took an hour on Monday morning, Dec. 12 to take care of final items of business before the start of second semester when school resumes in January.

The 7:30 a.m. meeting opened in the high school meeting room with a final report from the 2021-22 audit performed by Scott Szabo with Lauer, Szabo and Associates out of Sterling. According to information from the report, the fund balance grew from 2020-21 giving the Haxtun School District about a six-month reserve, which Szabo said is a heathy number.

In sticking with budget talks, the Board opted to cash in a CD and the Scholarship Agency CD and place those funds in a new CD at Points West Community Bank with an interest rate of 3.4 percent.

In the next few items of business, board members approved a short list of staff members including Jeney Torres as a para-professional, Wyatt Workman as an assistant boys’ basketball coach and Ryan Henry as a substitute janitor.

Before the end of the short hour-long meeting, members approved a resignation from Ashlea Quigley as secondary social studies effective at the end of this school year.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank the Haxtun community for all the love, support and welcome that I have received during my tenure at Haxtun High School. I cannot say enough about the phenomenal student body we have and the amazing community that Haxtun is. Over the last five years, I have been honored to watch Haxtun students grow and develop into strong leaders, thoughtful problem solvers, inquisitive critical thinkers and above all kind-hearted and mindful human beings. It truly has been a privilege to be a part of their learning and growth,” Quigley said. “Sadly, however, it is with a heavy heart that I must submit this letter of resignation, effective at the end of the 2022-23 school year, unless otherwise necessary to depart earlier. Unfortunately, at this time, Haxtun High School is no longer an appropriate fit for myself or my family. I will forever be grateful for my time in Haxtun. I would like to think that ‘Once A Bulldog, Always A Bulldog,’ and with that I will come back to visit and hopefully watch the students in as many academic and athletic events as possible.”

The Haxtun Board of Education will meet for the first time in 2023 on Tuesday, Jan. 17 for a work session at 5:30 p.m. with a board meeting to follow at 7:30 p.m.
