The Fleming Wildcats notched their first win of the season in week number two of action on the basketball court last week. The Wildcats opened with losses to Haxtun and Belleview Christian in week one. The week number two win over Caliche puts them at 1-2 on the season heading into a home court holiday tournament.
Fleming and Caliche look evenly matched in the opening minutes of last Friday’s play on the Buff’s court. Fleming pulled ahead in the second quarter outscoring the home team by seven to take a nine point advantage at the half, 22-13.
The Wildcats continued to control the offensive pace for the remainder of the contest. They’d go on to add seven points to their advantage in the third and another 14 in the final quarter to take a 62-32 victory over the Buffaloes.
Senior Kolten Houser led the Wildcats on the scoreboard for the night with 18 points. He made good on six two-point shots for 12 and shot 100 percent from the free-throw line and from outside the arc for the remaining six.
Senior Braylen Feather added 15 points. He also shot 100 percent from the charity stripe — sinking four of four attempts. He tacked on the remaining 11 with four two-pointers and a three.
The duo of Braylen Feather and Houser also contributed top numbers in the rebound category. Feather led the team with 10; two offensive and eight defensive. Houser added seven; two offensive and five defensive. Senior Harry Harms brought down eight. He split his at three and five, respectively.
Feather, the team’s point guard, also led in assists with eight and steals with three for the night.
The Wildcats are scheduled to host their Winter Hoops Tournament this weekend. On Friday they’re set to take on Flagler for the evening’s final contest at 7:30 p.m. The Flagler Panthers enter at 1-3 on the year. The winner of that contest will advance in the bracket to take on the winner of a 4:30 p.m. Friday contest between Gilpin County and Arickaree. The Winter Hoop Championship is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 17.
The loser of Friday’s contest between Fleming and Flagler will play in a consolation matchup against the loser of Gilpin County/Arickaree on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
