Charles "Chuck" Dunbar

Charles Boyd Dunbar was found deceased at his home in Haxtun on Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Chuck was born Nov. 20, 1951 in Sterling to Boyd and Lydia Dunbar of Haxtun. He attended Haxtun Schools, grades kindergarten through 12th grade.

Chuck loved all sports. He especially enjoyed track and excelled in long distance running. He also participated in basketball, bowling and in recent years had taken up golfing. He was also active with his class. Chuck was President of his senior class.

Chuck was involved in the community. One year the town sponsored a program for kids, and Chuck was available to coach a team. The First Annual Bowling Challenge at Sunset Lanes in Sterling had approximately 70 participants. Chuck was the winner of the men's high game with a 191.

Chuck's father had health problems and Chuck was able to keep the farm going for a number of years. He was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and spent the rest of his life battling it. Only recently was he advised to discontinue the meds which he did and seemed to be OK.

Chuck started smoking at an early age and it had taken a toll on his lungs. He managed to quit smoking several years ago, but the damage was apparent. Recently it had gotten worse. He call his mother in the final days of his life and said he had a sore throat and a slight temp, so he would stay away. He was doing everything for his mother - checking in several times daily and doing the shopping. After a period of time, she called him and he didn't answer the phone. Later she called again and still no answer. She went to his home and knocked, but no answer. The following day, he was found in the bathroom - had dropped dead by natural cause.

Chuck is survived by his mother Lydia Dunbar, Haxtun; sister Bonnie Dunbar, Kenya, Africa; sister-in-law Teresa Gilbertson, Haxtun; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father Boyd Dunbar and brother Bohn Dunbar.

Memorial services were held Thursday, Oct. 27.
