Dona West Lightsey

Dona Mae (Green) West Lightsey died Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2022 at the age of 91.

Dona was born to Henry and Marie Green on Feb. 3, 1931 in Fleming, where she grew up on the family farm and graduated from Fleming Schools in 1949. April 4, 1953 she was married to Robert (Bob) West in Sterling. They had two sons Paul and David. Bob died in 1995 and Dona was remarried to Wilbur Lightsey in 2001 who passed in 2017.

Dona loved nursing, horses, knitting, dancing, camping, boating, fishing and volunteering for the activities her boys were involved in. Dona was a nurse for Logan County Hospital then Sterling Regional MedCenter for 40 years, from 1954 until her retirement in 1994. During her nursing career she returned to school to complete the waivered license practical nurse program. She then served as president of the Logan County LPN Association for four years. Her love of horses led her to start a 4-H Club dedicated to young girls and their horses. She and Bob were involved with the Silver Spurs Riding Group and Fleming Saddle Club and enjoyed many trail rides, campouts and gymkhanas.

Dona and Bob loved dancing, mainly square dancing along with the variation of round dancing. They enjoyed boating and fishing and she was an avid water skier competing in several competitions. She had a love of knitting, mainly sweaters and caps. Dona was a lifelong adult member of the First Presbyterian Church of Sterling and the sorority Beta Sigma Phi were she was awarded the Order of the Rose. Dona and Wibur enjoyed dancing albeit Polka dancing and traveling with friends in their fifth wheel camp trailers and motorhomes along with Bingo at the Elks.

Dona was a breast cancer survivor and spent the last five years living at Sterling Health and Rehab where she was loved and will be missed.

Dona is survived by her son David and wife Valerie, Centennial; grandsons Brent and wife Jess, Fremont, Neb.., Rob and wife Erica, Peyton, Christian and wife Jamie, Centennial, and Jeremy and wife Kate, Littleton; nine great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren as well as Wilbur's children and grandchildren.

Dona is preceded in death by her parents; brother Herbert; sister Viola; Robert West and Wilbur Lightsey; and son Paul and wife Barbara West.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Dona's name to the First Presbyterian Church care of Tennant Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1547, Sterling, CO 80751.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 at Tennant Funeral Home with Rev. Michelle Witherspoon officiating. Private inurnment will follow at a later date at the Fleming Cemetery.
