The annual Haxtun Corn Festival is slated for the last Saturday in September in downtown Haxtun. This year’s event will take place on Sept. 24 and honor Grand Marshal Fran Gilliland who celebrated her 101st birthday on Sept. 8, just two weeks before the 101st Corn Festival. This year’s theme is “Pulling Together Since 1909.”
The Haxtun Corn Festival, sponsored each year by the Haxtun Chamber of Commerce, opens again this year with the Haxtun Volunteer Fireman’s pancake breakfast at the fire hall at the corner of North Colorado Avenue and Strohm Street. Serving begins at 7 a.m.
The annual J. Jeffryes Memorial run/walk lines up at 8 a.m. along Colorado Avenue. This event raises money for scholarships awarded each year to graduating seniors of Haxtun High School. Organizers announce winners of the run at 8:30 a.m. on the main stage.
Also at 8:30 am., line up for the parade begins in the elementary grade school parking lot on North Colorado Avenue. Participants can register for the parade at the Haxtun Community Center. Float judging takes place at 9:15 a.m.
The Kiddie Parade will kick off the 101st annual Haxtun Corn Festival parade at 9:45 a.m. followed by the parade at 10 a.m. Kiddie Parade line up occurs at the Berean Bible Church in the north parking lot.
Other events and activities throughout the day include Lil’ Mr. and Miss Corn Festival Contest, FFA member auction, Johnny Miller Memorial Tractor Pull, High Plains Heritage Quilters Quilt Show, street games, Chuck Allen Memorial Crop and Garden Show, Violet Mae Anderson Memorial Flower Show, kiddie land, Haxtun High School Alumni meeting, food court, vendors and more.
The Festival will also feature a beer garden located in downtown Haxtun south of Points West Community Bank lawn. The beer garden opens at noon and will serve until 11 p.m. The beer garden will feature music from DJ Gary Wisdom. ID will be required for entry into the beer garden; no exceptions.
