Haxtun Health, Colorado State University Extension Agent Stephanie Starkebaum and Personal Trainer Lane Anderson have combined forces to bring the Haxtun community an eight-week, 5K training program for anyone who wants to walk, run or do a combination of both at the annual J. Jeffryes 5K, run and walk event. The J. Jeffryes 5K is set to take place on the morning of Corn Festival, Saturday, Sept. 24. This program is aimed to help beginners as well as those that are looking to find a fitness support group, be held accountable and build confidence over the next eight weeks. Whether you can already run 3.1 miles or are just starting out, we want to invite you to join our eight-week 5K training program.
Those that participate will be guided through a warm-up, a timed walk/run segment on the 5K course and a cool-down. A private Facebook Group has been created to give tips, workouts, offer support and hold each participant accountable by asking for pictures of their walk/runs throughout the remainder of the week. This program aims to give you confidence, support and have fun as you train with others towards one common goal, complete 3.1 miles at the annual J. Jeffryes 5K event.
Anderson and Starkebaum will co-lead the training program. Anderson graduated from Haxtun High School in 2014 and currently owns and operates The Whole 9 Yards, a sprinkler and lawncare business. He is also a certified personal trainer and is currently working to gain more certifications in areas such as body building, nutrition and group fitness. He has found a strong passion for fitness and wants to help others gain confidence and become more physically fit. He recently joined Haxtun Health’s Wellness team — a team that strives to offer the Haxtun community different forms of fitness classes or training programs throughout the year. Anderson will be looking to add more fitness classes or take on personal training clients in the months to come.
Starkebaum works as an Extension Agent for Colorado State University in Phillips County. She holds a B.S. in Health and Exercise Science with a concentration in Health Promotion. She has held multiple fitness certifications as well as competed in several running and triathlon races throughout her life. Over the last 10 years she has worked hard to battle back from some health complications in which she had to start by walking in a pool to regain her strength before moving on to land exercises. She understands that no matter if you are in “marathon” or “I hope I can walk to the mailbox” shape; it takes making yourself a priority, holding yourself accountable and a great support system, to help you reach your health and fitness goals.
CSU Extension is excited to partner with Haxtun Health and Anderson to provide this training opportunity for the community, Starkebaum said. The training program will begin on Monday, Aug. 1 from 6-7 p.m. The program will continue each Monday through-out the eight weeks except on Labor Day (a different day will be scheduled). Haxtun Health has agreed to pay for the 5K J. Jeffryes entry fee if participants make it to seven out of the eight training meetups.
There is a small fee for the program and a portion of the cost will go towards a participation cash prize drawing. For instance, each participant will be asked to put their name in the drawing each time they attend a training meetup. One lucky participant will earn cash for their efforts at the end of the program.
If you would like to participate in the training program, please reach out to Starkebaum by email [email protected] or by calling the Phillips County Extension office at (970) 854-3616. Participants will be sent a welcome email with more information after sign up.
