It’s mid-July and that means Haxtun’s Old-Fashioned Saturday Night is just around the corner. The 35th annual event is slated for Saturday, July 16 in downtown Haxtun and promises the popular car show as well as town-wide garage sales, a poker run, vendors, burnout competition, street dance, beer garden and more.
Old-Fashioned Saturday Night events kick off at 8 a.m. with town-wide garage sales. According to organizer Chris Kuehn, there are over 20 multi-family garage sale locations this year. Maps will be available Friday afternoon and Saturday morning at Haxtun Super’s and the Zip Trip gas station.
At 11 a.m. bikes and riders of all kinds will depart from the Haxtun Fire Hall for a poker run, slated to take participants to Sedgwick, Sterling and Atwood before the final card is drawn at 4 p.m. at the Haxtun Fire Hall. The poker run will pay out in cash prizes to top winners while also benefitting the Haxtun Swimming Pool project.
Car show registration begins on Colorado Avenue at 3 p.m. with the show to follow from 4-7 p.m. Awards will be given to the top-three overall entrants in addition to a semi-truck award and a Chief’s Award picked by Haxtun’s Police Chief Nate Nadow. Car show award winners will be announced on stage at 7 p.m.
Following the car show, the ever-popular burnout competition will begin at the corner of Colorado Avenue and Strohm Street at 6:30 p.m. As the smoke settles and the crowd votes on their favorite, the winner will receive a cash prize in addition to an award. Cars, trucks, bikes and things alike are then invited to cruise main.
Other attractions throughout the day include food and craft vendors, kiddie land with inflatable bounce houses, dunk tank and Dozer games as well as the annual hog roast at the fire hall.
The Haxtun Volunteer Firemen plan to serve a free-will pulled pork dinner from 5-7 p.m.
A beer garden and street dance will wrap up the day’s events. The two will be held at the corner of Fletcher Street and Colorado Avenue south of the Haxtun Town Hall. Music will be provided by Gary Wisdom. The beer garden and street dance are slated from 4-11 p.m.
