What can we reason but from what we know? -Alexander Pope
Wanda R. West passed away on May 13, 2022 at Fairacres Manor in Greeley at the age of 98.
Wanda was born July 21, 1923 on the Hulse Family homestead in Fleming to George W. Hulse and Josephine (Pletcher) Hulse. Wanda graduated from Fleming High School in 1941. She lived all her life in Fleming with the exception of a time during WWII, where she worked at Remington Arms packing bullets for the war. Wanda was united in marriage to Lee M. West on March 4, 1943 in Sidney, Neb. with Henry Hulse and Cleone West Gerkin as witnesses. Through the years, the couple enjoyed traveling many places to enjoy family and friends. After Lee passed, she traveled with friends and family to the UK, Hawaii and San Carlos, MX.
Wanda was an important part of the Fleming community. She and her brother Henry kept the Fleming Alumni records for many years and helped choose the scholarship fund recipients. She would lead the singing of the school song at the Alumni Banquet and was an "honored citizen" at the Fleming Fall Festival in 2003, active with the Fleming Museum and was very involved in almost every capacity of the United Methodist Church. She loved to sing in the choir and sang for many funerals. She also held the treasurer's position for the missions committee for many years. She was one of the charter members of the 20/20 club service organization and the Matinee Study Club.
Over the years, she worked for the Town of Fleming, Harms Brothers trucking and her favorite was working for the Fleming School as a meticulous bookkeeper for many years. After her retirement, she worked at the elevator during wheat harvest. She loved helping and meeting new people. Her love for children, she attended activities of all kinds, watching grandchildren/great-grandchildren and many adopted children at the school.
Her last ten months was spent at Fairacres Manor in Greeley. After living in her own home for 65 years, she was hesitant to move but she rallied and had a wonderful time, meeting new friends and being very social playing bingo, cards, puzzles, crocheting, word search and watching the Broncos and Rockies games. She loved having someone cook for her, fix her hair and do her nails. The nurses would say if we just had a hundred of Wanda it would make us very happy. All loved her!
Those left to cherish her memory include Larry and Alta Ann, Dacono, Nancy Chandler and Eldon, Laramie, Wyo., George and Beverly, Greeley, Susan and Jay, Milliken, Walter and Anita, Broomfield; daughter-in-law Bonnie West, Axtell, Neb.; sister-in-law and forever friend Cleone (West) Gerkin, Tucson, Ariz.; 18 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Those gone before her are husband Lee; son Doren; grandsons Aaron West and Dean West; parents; Katherine Green; brother Henry Hulse; and sister June Wertz.
While there is sadness in the loss of our loved one, there is no loss in a life well lived. Wanda lived her life well and full of love!
