Bulldogs take on Briggsdale and Yuma in baseball action last week

Wind has ripped across the plains of Colorado wreaking havoc all over, including scheduling for high school athletics and Haxtun baseball is no exception. For most of last week, winds canceled bus routes, changed athletics' schedules and forced spring sports teams to practice inside. However, a break in the weather allowed for a sunny Friday afternoon contest with the Haxtun Bulldogs and the Briggsdale Falcons. The Bulldogs hosted the Falcons for the one varsity, one junior varsity match up.

The Bulldogs dominated at home plate, putting up 18 runs throughout the first few innings while holding Briggsdale to just three to end the game in early innings. Haxtun won, 18-3 over the fellow 1A team.

Saturday also brought weather suitable for spring baseball and the Haxtun Bulldogs traveled south to face off with the 2A Yuma Indians in double-header varsity action. In game one, neither team scored in the first or second innings but Haxtun managed two runs in the top of the third for an early lead. Two innings later, in the bottom of the fifth, Yuma put three runs on the board which would tie the game following a single run from the Bulldogs in the top of the inning. It all came down to the sixth inning when the Indians upped Haxtun by one run, three to two in the sixth, to clinch a 6-5 win.

Keegan Colglazier batted .500 in game one against Yuma. He had one hit from two at bats and registered two runs batted in. Owen Knode went .333 on the day including one hit and one run. Kyle Fryrear averaged a .250 at the plate with one run, one hit and two RBIs. Kaiden Schelling also registered one RBI Saturday morning.

The Bulldogs stole five bases on Saturday morning including one each from Knode, Fryrear, Grant Statz, David Avery and Kailin Kelley.

Jerron Turney threw from the mound in game one for Haxtun. He struck out four of 32 batters while allowing six hits and nine runs.

Yuma struck early in the first inning of game two, putting three runs across home plate to go up right away. Haxtun added three runs in the top of the second to tie things up, briefly, as the Indians regained the lead with a one-run showing in the second. Yuma added three additional runs in the fourth to go onto claim a 7-5 win over the Bulldogs.

Turney earned a .333 average at the plate with three at bats. Of those, he tallied one run, one hit and one RBI. Colglazier went .250 with one run, one hit and one RBI. Austin Hanes and Knode each registered an RBI in game two.

Haxtun stole two bases, one each from runners Knode and Fryrear.

On the mound, Schelling faced 29 batters. Of those, the sophomore pitcher struck out six, allowed four hits and seven runs.

This week, the Bulldogs are set to face off with Otis on the road Thursday afternoon for a single varsity match up. On Saturday, Haxtun will travel again as they hit the road for a contest against the Merino Rams. According to MaxPreps, the Bulldogs from Otis are currently 5-2 overall and 2-0 in their league. Merino, a top Lower Platte League contender, is 11-1 overall and 8-1 in the league. The Rams one loss comes from Wiggins at the end of March when Merino split a double header with the Tigers.

Nine games into the season and the Bulldogs hold a 5-4 overall record. MaxPreps says the team is 3-2 in league play.
