Lady Wildcats remain at number three; prepare to take on number two

The Lady Wildcats of Fleming held on to their number three spot in Colorado High School Activities Association rankings after earning a set of wins last week. The Lady Wildcats closed out league play on Friday with a victory over Weldon Valley to finish with a conference record of 2-1. A win over Genoa-Hugo/Karval on Saturday puts them at 15-1 overall.

Fleming cruised to a smooth victory on Friday night over the Lady Warriors and held them scoreless in the first and third quarters. The Lady Wildcats took a home win by a final score of 46-11.

Junior Kally Kirkwood led the local squad with 12 points in the contest. Seniors Whitney Chintala and Sam Pope followed with nine and eight respectively.

Chintala led her team under the net in rebounds. She brought down a total of 13 boards followed by Kirkwood with seven.

Chintala and junior Lexi Schaefer each tallied five steals in the contest. Chintala and senior classmate Zoey Vandenbark earned the team-high three assists.

The following night, the Lady Wildcats hosted the Lady Pirates out of Genoa-Hugo/Karval. The local ladies nearly shutout their opponent in two quarters for a second consecutive night; they gave up just two points in the opening period, but held the Lady Pirates scoreless in the fourth. The final score stood at 48-25, Fleming.

Pope and sophomore Madi Serrato led the group in scoring with 11 points apiece. Pope went seven-for-eight from the charity stripe; Serrato shot 67 percent from outside the three-point arc for six of her 11. Vandenbark and Schaefer each contributed seven points for the Lady Wildcats.

Chintala brought down six rebounds while grabbing six steals on defense. Serrato led in steals with eight and contributed five rebounds.

Just two games remain on the regular season schedule for the Lady Wildcats. They'll hit the road for both of those contests beginning with an appearance in Westminster at Flatirons Academy this Saturday, Feb. 12. The Flatirons Academy Lady Bison currently hold the number two spot behind Briggsdale in CHSAA's 1A rankings. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 17 will mark the final game of the regular season. Fleming is set to travel to the home of the Sedgwick County Cougars that day for contests beginning at 4 p.m. Sedgwick County is currently 11-2 and holds the fifth spot in CHSAA's 2A rankings.
