The Haxtun Lady Bulldogs are moving onto Regional action following the conclusion of the 2021 regular season. The team took down Prairie and Akron in the final week of action before post-season play. A third place finish in State standings gives the Lady Bulldogs a home-seat advantage in Region C play, set to take place this Saturday.
Haxtun hosted the Prairie Lady Mustangs in the season's final regular season home game last Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs put on a stellar performance in front of a home crowd, taking down the Lady Mustangs 25-15, 25-10 and 25-12.
According to stats on Maxpreps, senior hitter Allie Thompson put down 11 of 26 kill attempts in the sweep. Senior Taylor Schram added six kills from her 11 attempts followed by senior Ella Coffin with five and Bobbi Starkebaum with four.
Thompson and sophomore Megan Walker led the team in blocks, each with three assists. Goddard registered two solo blocks at the net followed by Coffin and Starkebaum, each with one.
As a team, the Lady Bulldogs served 89.2 percent in the three-set win. Walker went 100 percent from the service line and registered five aces. K'lyn Bornhoft registered eight aces, the team high.
In the back row, Schram led her team with seven digs. Bornhoft tallied six and Coffin added five. On serve receive, Coffin registered nine passes, Bornhoft put up eight and Walker tallied seven.
Schram, one of the team's two main setters, put up 12 assists for Lady Bulldog kills followed by Thompson with 10.
On Friday, Haxtun traveled to Akron to take on the Akron Lady Rams. The Lady Bulldogs struggled in the first set and found themselves down following a 25-23 loss. The team regained their composure and found their groove to go onto take the win with the three remaining sets, 25-15, 25-12 and 25-17.
The win in Akron wrapped up regular season action and leaves the Lady Bulldogs with an overall 20-3 record.
Two Lady Bulldogs registered double-digits in the kill department led by Thompson with 17 and Coffin with 10. Goddard trailed with nine kills followed by Schram with six. Thompson earned a .410 hitting percentage with 17 kills from 39 attempts and just one error.
Thompson also led at the net in blocks with 13; she earned the team high off three solo and 10 assisted blocks. Coffin tallied five total blocks followed by Starkebaum with four.
Goddard and Coffin both went 100 percent in the serve department while three ladies tallied two aces; aces came from Bornhoft, Goddard and Schram.
Back row libero Bornhoft tallied 18 passes on serve receive, the team high, followed by Coffin with 16 and Walker with 11. On defense, Bornhoft dug up 19 passes from the back row.
Schram and Thompson combined for 42 total assists in the four-set win in Akron; Thompson tallied 26 and Schram had 16.
Composite volleyball rankings on Colorado Preps puts Haxtun as the number three seed in 1A volleyball action. Briggsdale took the top spot followed by Fleming at number two. Merino came in as the fourth place team followed by Wiley at number five.
In Region C volleyball action, Haxtun will host a triangle event on Saturday with #14 McClave and #22 Evangelical Christian. Haxtun will face off with Evangelical Christian, followed by a matches with McClave and Evangelical Christian and Haxtun and McClave.
According to Maxpreps, McClave finished the regular season with a 16-6 record. Evangelical Christian holds a similar record with 13 wins and six losses.
The winner of each Region will advance to the State Tournament slated for next week at the Broadmoor Area in Colorado Springs.
